DA: Wonderland double stabber offered to let cops beat him up; they declined

A guy charged with nearly disemboweling a man and slicing up a woman after an argument at the Wonderland Blue Line stop was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 at his arraignment yesterday in a Whidden Hospital room - where he is now being treated for his own chest pains - the Sufffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Matthew DeCosta, 29, is charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for an incident last Friday in which he allegedly thrust a knife into a 49-year-old Everett man, sending him to Mass. General with puncture wounds to his liver and a lung. A Malden woman got cut in the arm when trying unsuccessfully to keep an argument from escalating into a bloody attack.

After the stabbings, prosecutors say, he boarded an inbound Blue Line train - which was held at Revere Beach so that police could catch up with him. According to the DA's office:

He had removed his sweatshirt but a portion of it was sticking out of his backpack. He had reddish-brown stains that appeared to be blood on his shoes and when he removed his hands from his pockets there were similar stains visible on the fabric.

"You guys got me," DeCosta allegedly said after being read his Miranda rights. "If you want to beat me up, take the handcuffs off me and fight me."

His male victim remains in the hospital, currently in stable condition, the DA's office reports.
