Election roundup: Taxes, casinos

The Globe talks to the four candidates for governor about tax policy; at least when it comes to Coakley and Baker: Not much to hear.

There's a reason they call him the Prince of Darkness.

MassLive.com talks to John Miller, the Republican candidate for attorney general, about how to fight crime.

Casinos may not be the sure bed they're made out to be - just look at Atlantic City and Foxwoods, the Herald says. But don't worry - Big Casino still has plenty of money to spend on the casino referendum question.

Is may be just me, but I can not get passed the format of the answers from Martha Coakley's campaing on taxes from the Globle. All of the other candidates' answers look as if they are answered by the candidate themselves, but hers start with "Martha..."

Clearly some aide just cut 'n pasted sections from her talking points. It's annoying they couldn't take the time to reformat it. Par for the course, I suppose.

It's been annoying how there has been almost no information / ideas / policies to come out from either camp. I'm an honest independent on this election -- I think Coakley has been a horrible AG so it's unlikely she'll be any better as governor. I didn't like Baker's tax policies last time around and I don't understand how he can make such a big deal about these ideas 4 years ago and then say he no longer supports those policies today.

I'll vote for whoever address a specific problem and not just dances around "big ideas".

There appear to be five candidates who were asked the questions, not four, Adam.

Do you know the party affiliations, if any, of the five?

I was just at Foxwoods Friday for the first time in a few years. Foxwoods has bigger problems than slots revenue. Their floor layout is horrible and extremely dated. They have next-to-no sit-down restaurants (that aren't Chinese food) and their "shopping" area is really sad. The game tables variety as well as the slot game ages are really bad too.

I'm sure the current economic climate and competition from other locations is having some toll, but Mohegan Sun just outshines Foxwoods in every category of the experience these days. Foxwoods used to win on one reason: poker. But that's not the case any more and they even moved their poker room from the nice big area it was in down into a low ceiling area below where it used to be. The space was extremely depressing to walk through let alone sit in.

The only good thing about my visit Friday was that I left with more money than I came in with...but it didn't feel worth it.

I agree with you on Foxwoods, but if you go back again, there are some sit-down restaurants on the MGM end. Or there were last time I went. I will admit it's a looong walk from the main casino.

What I don't understand is that Martha didn't know how much the state gasoline tax rate was. It is the first ballot question. The Ballot Question booklet mailed out by the Secretary of State William Francis Galvin states that the SUMMARY> " As required by law, summaries are written by the State Attorney General". Plus there are more credits to the Attorney General in the booklet. As she is running for office, and the question is on the ballot, it's kind of basic that she should be aware of this, which obviously she isn't. She must leave it to the little people to deal with, seeing how a leader delegates tasks and such.

Yikes, that appears to be a pretty poor record on public disclosure. Thank you Adam, for posting that. Interesting reading.
