Dorchester house explodes; multiple injuries

Hansborough Street explosion

The house at 27 Hansborough St. exploded around 9:20 p.m., sending twelve people to the hospital - two with serious injuries - the Boston Fire Department reports.

The apparent natural-gas explosion pushed the house off its foundation and led to its partial collapse. The resulting fire went to three alarms.

Residents of surrounding homes were evacuated. National Grid gave the OK to let them return around midnight.

The explosion made me think of another one in the neighborhood a few years ago. Not to jump to conclusions, but NStar, you have over 900 gas leaks in Dorchester. Maybe fix them?

So, which company is responsible? Adam says National Grid, John says NStar.

As they run most (if not all) of the gas service in Boston. NStar has a gas division, but only in certain communities.

Boston Gas used to cover the entire city, except Hyde Park. I cannot remember who is who these days. Nevertheless, DPU has got to force these companies to do repairs rather than look to cost benefit analyses on whether a break in a line gets fixed.

I had an inspector tell me I had leaky gas pipes leading from the street to my meters. His temporary fix was to wrap a little electrical tape around them. It took me several YEARS of phoning National Grid to get them to come over and replace the pipes. I live on the Roxbury/Dorchester line, by the way.

Boston Gas , now National Grid , supplies gas service to Boston , except parts of Hyde Park , I believe , which is serviced by NStar, ( formerly Boston Edison ) . This was caused by NStar buying Commonweath Gas & Electric, which had supplied the gas to Hyde Park. There were other company names involved, this is a simplification, not a SEC statement. The gas companies , in general , were kind to the Irish and their skills with the pick and shovel.

Is cementitious clapboards and do not burn, but clearly from the picture you can see this siding was vinyl which burns a little slower than the asphalt (gasoline) siding used in the 60's and 70's.
