Yes, an iPad or even a MacBook Air would make more sense than carrying around a typewriter. Though, that typewriter is a better theft deterrent than anything Apple could come up with.
Days long ago the author of Alternative America would set up a typewriter in front of Holyoke Center http://harvardmagazine.com/2013/11/holyoke-center-to-become-new-campus-hub in Harvard Square and write about what is happening in the moment. Passersby would be invited to sit at the typewriter and write about what is happening. The completed pages then were posted in front for the other passersby to read.

Carrying around a type writer
Carrying around a type writer makes more sense then carrying around an iPad/MacBook + a printer, and having to hunt down an electrical outlet.
That and carbon paper
