A hawk on Comm. Ave. - like, literally on Comm. Ave.

Hawk on Commonwealth Avenue

Roving UHub photographer Lauren Reemsnyder captured the scene this morning as somebody blocked traffic on Comm. Ave. near Allston Street to keep a hawk from getting flattened - because hawks don't know you're supposed to cross at the green, not in-between.

UPDATE: Reemsnyder reports:

I don't know how he ended up on the street, but animal control came by and took him away a little while ago. I think he was injured because some idiot tried to get him to fly away by nudging him with a skateboard, but he wouldn't budge. It took animal control two seconds to get him into a cage and into the truck. Hopefully he'll be okay!

Why did he cross the road?

Animal control came and took him away, so hopefully the little guy will be okay.

Unless he's chowing down on roadkill, there's something wrong with a bird of prey just hanging around on the road. They don't stand around on the ground - they prefer high vantage points like trees or power lines. Does anybody know if he seemed injured or sick?

Although this hawk seems to have been injured, not all hawks prefer heights. Marsh hawks live in the Fens. They perch and glide low - I once saw one glide in front of me and take a squirrel right on Queensberry Street.

Heavy props to a guy who literally risked his life for a bird on that street full of nutball drivers. Secondly, if the bird is going to Angell, he (or she) will be just fine.

Plus, if the Hawk is injured in a way that will keep it from being able to live in the wild again, The Trailside Museum at the Blue Hills Reservation can take it in.

The End.
