I Red Sox to shoehorn 160 more seats into Fenway

The Red Sox plan to pack more fans into Fenway Park with the addition of a corner suite next to the Green Monster and 160 more pavilion and bleacher seats.

The seating is part of an estimated $4.2 million in proposed improvements submitted for Boston Landmarks Commission approval.

The new suite and 115 pavilion seats will fill a gap between left field and the stairs and landing that access the Green Monster. They will not impact the existing Green Monster wall, “which will remain untouched and visible,” Red Sox filings state.

Fenway Park’s Coke Deck also would be expanded under the team’s plans. It isn’t clear whether that will include more seats or standing-room-only areas. About 46 new bleacher seats would be added by relocating a center field TV camera “shed” from the northwest corner of the section to a “basket” below the Bank of America sign. The Red Sox also proposed four new LED “ribbon” boards around the front of the State Street pavilion seating level. Renderings show them as Boston Globe news tickers. Red Sox owner John Henry purchased the paper in a $70 million deal last year.

Sox spokeswoman Zineb Currant said the team is seeking approval for several potential improvement projects for 2015 and will make an announcement at a later date.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority came under fire last year for giving the Sox a lucrative $7.3 million deal for air rights over Lansdowne Street for Green Monster seats and an easement to shut part of Yawkey Way for concessions, both in perpetuity.
