Since this festival happened on both sides of that old town boundary, it was in both Roxbury and the South End.

Funny - I was at a discussion a few weeks ago about building the future Boston and one person who had not grown up here mentioned how incredibly splintered and neighborhood-focused Boston seems to a newcomer. When I posted this photo on Instagram and Twitter I never mentioned the South End or Roxbury, I just said Boston. It was a great Boston event.

Even people from suburbs - like 30 miles or more out - will say "I'm from big city". Not "I'm from tiny insular ridiculous neighborhood or town that you never heard of".

It's one thing when you're trying to impress somebody at a conference in Chicago and tell them you're from Boston and not, say, Wayland, which nobody outside of 495 has probably ever heard of.

But the audience of this site is not bored salesmen at a conference at some convention center way, way west of Worcester. It's Bostonians. We know what the local neighborhoods are and they're part of who we are. The fact that nobody can agree on just what the borders of some of those neighborhoods are is an interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes infuriating thing, but just because nobody outside of 495 has ever heard of Readvillle doesn't mean it's not important to people who frequent this site. And that's even before we get to the practical ramifications of distinguishing neighborhoods with a gazillion different Washington Streets, three Mt. Vernon streets, etc., etc. - you can't just say something happened on Park Street without identifying which one.
