Just in time for rush hour: Orange Line gets all sour

Waiting for a shuttle bus at Wellington due to Orange Line being dead

Riders probably too tired to beef at Wellington about bustitution. Photo by Tim Healey.

Just at the start of rush hour, a train just outside Malden Center proved worse off than a doorknob. The Malden Fire Department had to be called into to evacuate the packed train, which means the T had to shut off power in both directions between Malden and Wellington. Shuttle buses were bruited about.

Now that the state has approved that contract with that Chinese company, we're supposed to see the first new Orange Line cars roll out in winter of 2018 - if all goes well, the T will get four new cars a month between then and the end of 2020.

Not sure why but the Silver Line Waterfront was also a mess around 545 today. I counted at least 10 buses in the busway outbound all backed up at WTC. Most of them were idling on Dessel in the tunnel (i assume the power draw was too much on the electric system) Back at south station the outbound platform was packed.

Maybe they took some silver line buses out of service to act as shuttle buses on the orange-- they do that sometimes during such disruptions.
