Looking for Nancy in Roslindale
By adamg on Fri, 10/17/2014 - 8:11am
The owners of Estate Bargains, a new old-stuff store at 417 Hyde Park Ave. that replaced a storefront church (that replaced the real-estate office that replaced a Caribbean restaurant) are doing some interesting things with the exterior walls of the place.
In addition to Sluggo and some serious tagging on the side, they've painted blocks on the front green and gotten Top Cat to provide a watchful eye on Hyde Park Avenue:

How long has it not been the Lamplighter ?
Lamplighter - ah memories!
It hasn't been that for decades. Ah... memories. (ahem...)
Lamplighter?
My grandfather, Bill McDonald, was the owner/tended bar at the Lamplighter until his early passing in about 1973. His wife, my grandmother, was Pauline, "Polly", and used to call Grandpa, "The Mayor." We lived across the street from the bar. I have very fond memories of the Lamplighter as a kid.
Art
Somebody slug Not Art boy if he gets with 1/4 mile of the place.
Excellent work.
Sluggo might be safe
I doubt the Not Art guy has even heard of Roslindale.
Graffiti anons come back
I'd like to think people could understand the difference between putting graffiti on the sides of buildings with permission is 100% different from tagging trains and other public property but based on the comments from a week back, I guess not.
This shows exactly why that other guy deserved fine/jail for his actions.
Pssst
I guess you don't realize that it's the same people that do this stuff that do the other stuff. Graffiti culture is broader than you want to think about.
No.
Actually my point is that this is on private property with permission and tagging, like that Chicago guy did on the trains, is not some awesome piece of culture. It's look-at-me pretentiousness by someone who can't be bothered to find a legit outlet or more likely isn't talented enough.
All too often people with no talent or skills hide behind the 'you don't understand it' claim whereas the actual truth is that they aren't doing anything of interest or merit.
You missed my point
The Chicago guy has plenty of these "permission" murals under his belt. That's what I'm saying, they're the same people. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it's not art.
