Old abandoned building at new mall on Hyde Park/Mattapan line catches fire

Firefighters responded at 8:30 p.m. to the new mall off River Street by Wood Avenue for what became a three-alarm fire in the smaller of two remaining buildings from the old Mattapan Paperboard complex.

The Boston Fire Department reports four firefighters suffered heat exhaustion.

Because of the difficulty in getting to the building from River Street, many firefighters had to come in in via an old bridge over the Neponset River from Truman Parkway. The hollowed out structure sits behind the recently opened Dollar Tree store.

Firefighters discovered the fire while driving down Truman Parkway - they noticed something flickering on the other side of the river.

Police blocked Truman Parkway at Fairmount Avenue because of the fire hoses stretched across Truman.

... there from a year or two ago, and I thought that the artist was still working on it. I was impressed that the builders/developers supported that. Hope this doesn't make these or other developers hesitant to support the arts in similar ways.

If I remember correctly, the piece involved projected video of the Neponset River (which runs directly behind the site) through a variety of seasons. A decent crowd turned out. May have even been three or four years ago.
