Woman struck and killed by Red Line train at Downtown Crossing

Happened around 9:50 p.m.

KidAtlantic reports he was on the train:

Calm and collected from MBTA personnel while evacuating the train at DC. Passengers shocked on platform to learn woman was struck.

Woman on platform upon exiting says she saw another woman standing on the yellow line as the train approached.

Power was shut so firefighters could extricate her body.

The T set up bus service between Broadway and Harvard, although it was a madhouse at Park Street. Orange Line trains bypassed Downtown Crossing for awhile.

Uber nearly tripled its fares in the Downtown Crossing area. Competitor Lyft also added a hefty surcharge.

Last week, a man was hit by an Orange Line train at Haymarket.

How awful. Some kind of human tragedy that we know nothing about + next time we are all hanging out here kicking the MBTA around *try* to imagine how disruptive this type of thing must be.

I am pretty sure this happens automatically as a result of a spike in demand, I can't figure out if that makes it better or worse.

Pretty dystopian in any event.

Nice angle Adam.

It's to encourage people to seek other means because of limited quantity of drivers as well as encourage other drivers to get on the road.

There wasn't some diabolical evil genius at Uber HQ saying "oohh, someone died, time to raise prices!". I'm guessing demand surged, as there were thousands of people looking for rides, so prices went up. That's the business model. You either pay for the ride, or you find another way to get where you're going.

It was pouring rain. Uber rates were 3X in Southie as well.

Uber has over 600 drivers in Boston alone and every one of them are out all hours of the day and night. Surge pricing is bullshit. Massport just had to move the limo pool over to one of the old rental car sites because the Uber drivers that hang their all day waiting for airport runs overloaded the old pool.

Reports are coming from witnesses that it was a suicide.
So sad.
DTX has had a rough week between that and the attempted robbery of the McD's across the street.

and traumatic for those witnessing this. You have got to feel for the train motorman. When the Herald writes about how these T employees are stealing our tax money they don't consider this perk of the job.

These suicides always sadden me on two fronts. For the person who feels it's their only way out...I wish they could get some help, but like others have said, it's not that easy. When people don't have the right insurance coverage, when they perhaps are homeless or on the street, or when places simply are too full to take on a new client...I've had people I've tried to get help for and it was a real challenge. Unfortunately, some poor souls do not have anyone left on earth to advocate for them; they are alone and have no idea where to even go. It seems as though there just aren't enough resources to go around.

And for the driver, I cannot imagine what their life will be like. How does one get that image out of their mind? It is horrifying, and I don't even know what to say, except to pray for both of them.

You're right, people berate the T all the time, but where would the Boston area be without it? I've lived in places without public transport and it's very difficult.

I heard someone was spraying pepper spray around in DTX station as well yesterday. Any truth to this?

I think so. I was on the shuttle bus, sitting next to a man who was looking out the window and suddenly he said that he just saw someone get sprayed by Park Street. Then on the train, I met a guy who said someone was spraying pepper spray in the area and he got some of it.

Yeah. A friend of mine missed being pepper sprayed by no more than two feet. A passerby wrestled the woman to the ground and she was arrested.

looks impressive when googled, but doesn't live up to it's claims. Try getting help sometime with mental health issues; difficult for a person with average access to resources, let alone this probably marginalized person. The public and private charity sectors spends considerable $ on this issue, I have no idea where it ends up.

And if you or someone you care deeply about should be unfortunate to get stuck dealing with public mental health institutions, you have my sympathy; they are a horror show. Our 'progressive' politicians haven't done much in this department, especially our outgoing governor.

Been helping a friend who had very severe depression/suicidal thoughts. Thankfully, the system actually "worked" for him. He finally went to an emergency room and he was admitted to a facility for eight weeks. I can happily report he is LIGHT YEARS better. Not everyone is this lucky... and it is so sad that being hospitalized for the flu is more acceptable in today's society than being hospitalized for depression.

May this woman finally rest peacefully.... and those who have been affected by this are in my thoughts....

also tend to reduce the reserves of persistence, gumption, and bootstrappiness that one needs to obtain help for the problem. Especially things like bipolar disorder and depression.
