Police: Andrew Square red light foils joyriding car thieves

Boston Police report arresting teens from Roxbury and Arlington who tried to outrun a pursuing cruiser in a stolen car this afternoon only to be boxed in by cars whose drivers were waiting for the light to change in Andrew Square.

Police say two officers responding to a 911 call at South Bay shortly after noon had their blues on when a car got in their way at the Old Colony Avenue rotary. They tried to pull the car over, but instead the driver just kept on gong down Preble - until he reached Andrew Square:

Upon seeing officers, the operator attempted to drive away but was unable to do so as the vehicle was blocked in. As officers approached the vehicle on foot, two individuals fled the scene, while officers were able to detain the three suspects remaining in the vehicle.

David Avalo, 18, of Roxbury, was charged with receiving stolen property. Two 16-year-olds, one from Roxbury, one from Arlington, were charged with the equivalent juvenile offenses. Two other people in the car managed to run away, police say.

Innocent, etc.

so the police were responding to a 911 call, but then a car (not involved in the original 911 call) got in the way so they were pulled over? I know that rotary well and each entrance to the rotary is at least 3 cars wide so if someone was in your way you could just go around them. That being said, were those that were pulled over the target of the initial pursuit?

so more than one unit may respond to a call. So if a responding car sees another crime or gets another call they deal with it. Happens all the time.

At that time of day, I'm sure all 3 lanes had cars in them.

Sorry I didn't include that in my original post, but it's in the BPD account - they ran the plates and found the car had been reported stolen.
