Police: Cambridge package thief picked up, delivered to booking

Cambridge Police report arresting their second suspect this month for a rash of doorstep and lobby package thefts.

On Wednesday, police say, a witness spotted Steven Ward, 59, of no particular address, lifting a package from a Green Street porch.

Ward was stopped by police three blocks from the location of the package theft. A suitcase that he was carrying contained an unopened Amazon Prime package labeled with a Green Street address. A criminal background check of Ward also revealed that he had an active felony default warrant for his arrest. He was subsequently charged with the warrant and failure to appear after recognizance for a felony.

On Aug. 29, a Medford man was arrested on a larceny charge after police tied him to a surveillance video showing a man stealing multiple packages on Garden Street.

Police say residents can combat this scourge by insisting delivery companies only deliver if somebody is home to sign for the package or by having packages delivered to work addresses or to friends or neighbors who are more likely to be home on the day of delivery.
