Police: Clothing-store employees came up with a plan to steal sneakers that was kind of clever, aside from the fact that it didn't work

Boston Police report arresting a trio of presumably now ex-employees of Expressions Clothing Store on American Legion Highway in Roslindale on charges they tried stealing about $6,000 worth of sneakers and shoes yesterday.

According to police, Emilio Jimenez, 20, of Jamaica Plain, Victor Pimentel, 20, of Roxbury and Taj Joseph, 18, of Hyde Park, hatched a plan to pack "dozens of boxes" of footwear into old shipping containers that looked like trash to take out to the store's dumpster - with the idea of picking them all up later.

Allegedly unfortunately for them, the store manager figured out what was going on, called police and managed to hold all three of them in place until officers arrived around 7:15 p.m.

The three now face charges of larceny over $250.

Innocent, etc.

And they would've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for that meddling store manager!

Maybe it was because a quarter of store's inventory suddenly disappeared....

I had a kid who "worked" for me one summer (note the parentheses.) He lied on his time sheet and then disappeared in early July. He had the NERVE to use me as a reference for YEARS. I always gave him a shitty rec. Finally, about a year ago I decided I just wouldn't respond to requests for references for him, since I felt like he shouldn't suffer forever. He eventually called me to ask me to give a ref and I told him that I couldn't do them anymore.

It's interesting that you would even give a recommendation. Most places I've worked have very clearly stated that all they will do in the future is confirm dates of employment and salary.

This.
I remember a long time ago a manager at the company I work for stating that it was the policy when responding to references to only give conformation of employment. The reason: in our litigious society giving a negative reference could land you in hot water.

We're supposed to direct all of ours to HR. They only give references in writing. They'll confirm dates of employment, salary, job title and overview of responsibilities, and terms on which person left. They use lawyerly language like "her file contains a termination notice, signed by her, stating she was being terminated for poor attendance."
