Quiet Roslindale Square breakfast nook could become full-service restaurant with liquor

Derna's

Derna's at 753 South St., where regulars can pour their own coffee, goes before the Boston Licensing Board next week seeking an all-alcohol license and permission to stay open until 1 a.m. and open a patio.

Stephen Judge, owner of Delfino, across the street, bought Derna's and the adjoining Minerva's Owl space earlier this year. Under his proposal, Derna's would expand into the former clothing store and add a 12-seat bar and also a 48-seat patio out back, with proposed hours of 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Because Derna's is in the Roslindale Village Main Street district, it could be eligible for one of the 25 new liquor licenses available to Boston to promote restaurants outside of the waterfront and downtown areas.

The board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.

unfair that Seven Stars can't even get a beer and wine license because they are somehow out of the Main Streets "zone" while Delfino's might be allowed to have two liquor licenses right across from each other. Will they start making Irish Coffees at 6 am?

That guy has been there 30+ years. Your buddy Steven, maybe 3.

Delfino opened in 2001. Did the owner have a older restaurant there? Wondering where the 30+ years comes from.

So the requirement for a liquor license is how long you've been open now? Seems like a pretty dumb requirement.

This. This right here is what's wrong with Boston. Someone isn't "owed" a license because they've been in the neighborhood 30 (or 10, or 50) years. Just give the licenses to responsible business owners so they can make a living.

plus you have to be born here and never left the neighborhood.

the owner of Seven Stars, his name is Chris. He's not my friend. I'm just a happy customer who feels his business deserves the same shot at a beer and wine license as a new restaurant in the Roslindale Square "Main Street" zone.

Any business that can satisfy the licensing requirements for food service should automatically be allowed to offer beer and wine. I hope Derna's/Delfino gets the license, but I also agree that Seven Star should have been able to get one. The state legislature needs to relinquish control and leave it to the city and market forces.

not Delfino's.

Sorry, just had to say it. Been hearing too many non-native Bostonians say "Public Gardens" and "Boston Commons."

Even Friendly Ice Cream eventually capitulated and became Friendly's.

This makes me happy. I love the idea of what Derna's could be, but when I went in there with the fam. a few weeks back to try it out, I was seriously disappointed. Why does a restaurant with a dish washer in plain view of the counter serve breakfast on paper plates with plastic silverware? Nuts. Another Delfino-run joint would be a great addition to the Squillage and hopefully they will serve good breakfast. On an aside, hey Blue Star owners - if you're reading - I love your food but can you please stop using plastic cups and selling orange juice in bottles? Better yet, can you put out a suggestions box so I don't have to write stuff on the inter-tubes in the hopes that you will read it? I have many kind suggestions for you!

I'm not a regular- I think I've been there 2 or 3 times- but when I've gone, I've gotten proper china.

Of course, the coolest part of Derna's, the thing that will probably go away, is that it is a one man operation. You place the order, watch him cook it, eat it, then fork out the cash (yes, a cash operation) when you are done.

My guess is that you got him in some kind of rush.

I'm not a guy who eats breakfast out, but Derna's would be my choice. I love the Full Irish at the Blue Star. That, and the 2 times I've been there it was essentially an Albanian hangout.

I go there all the time - usually there's one table with cops - lots of families on the weekends, all walks of life there... great classic breakfast place.

Again, I'm not a breakfast guy, so I avoid such places on week-ends (though I did hit Derna's one Sunday at 9 AM.) If I'm going to wait in line to eat breakfast, I'll defer to the Cheerios in the kitchen cabinet.

Don't get me wrong, the Blue Star is great, and the do have the Full Irish on their menu, there was something about Derna's that struck me. I was going to say that they are old school Rozzie, but so is the Blue Star!

And nothing against the Albanians. It might have just been the times I've been there or walked by (weekdays.) It's great flavor.

If you don't like greasy spoons don't go.

great thing about dernas is that it's one of very few places around where you can get food really early in the morning. I guess 6am is fine for most people... but some of us are up before then.

Lot of change on that side of the block between this and the possible Petco-spinoff a few storefronts down.
