A reason to visit Readville

Norton Street house in Readville lit up for Christmas

When you turn onto Norton Street from either River or Readville, just follow the blue glow in the sky to 26 Norton for the Canale family's annual Christmas celebration. You'll find an entire front yard full of glowing ornaments and lights, turning on and off to festive music. A life-size video Santa waves to you from inside the house.

Ken Canale Jr. and other family members will probably be outside to greet you, hand you a candy cane and urge you to check out the backyard as well:

This is the first year I've seen this display. I happened to be in the area and decided to check it out. Glad I did. I guess this is the Canale family's way of sincerely wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Thank you Canales and if you reading UHub, Merry Christmas back at you..

We went and checked this out and the house on Metropolitan previous posted - both are great. I like the Met one better but this was way over the top in a good way. Anything else like these two in the greater Rosi/HP/WR area?

While it messed with traffic, I do miss the Christmas castle on the J-Way.

Word on the street is that when Ken Sr. passed away a couple of years ago, there was a lot of doubt that this display would continue. Ken Jr., however, has doubled down, and it has only grown more insanely grandiose.

MY WIFE and I went there tonight. It was magnificent. Lights synched to music (in the backyard, as well, LED display has four "faces" lip-synching) and more kitsch than is comprehensible.

It all works. Not the least of the endearing things about it is the people who run it. We met at least three, all welcoming and smiling and willing to explain anything you wanted explained. Wonderful folks.

I'll tell you a story that may give you an idea, if you're in a festively receptive mood, of the emotional impact of the display. MY WIFE hardly ever hugs anyone, not even family. After we walked around, saw it all, and stood there talking to the older male member of the family who works putting it all together, MY WIFE said, "Can I hug you? I don't normally hug anyone - ask my husband - but this is just so wonderful!"

And so she did. Hell, I felt like hugging him, too, but I figured after he hugged MY WIFE, I wouldn't be such a treat.
