I'd say a fair guesstimate would be 15 fast food workers, 75 paid SEIU picketers and 50 fools with cameras.

The best part. When I got back to the office and jumped on twitter i saw the YMCA of Cambridge say they were in "solidarity" with the 15 protesters. However when I looked at the average pay of said YMCA on glass door it was $9 hr.

Your status as someone who is more important than hapless fast food flippers is secure!!!

Now do be careful not to break your arm as you pat yourself on the back for your exalted specialness.

The protesters initially sat in in the middle of Washington Street in Downtown Crossing looking for police to arrest them.

When it became apparent that they would not be arrested by police the protesters moved to the intersection of Congress and State streets in the Financial District where they were arrested in an orderly manner within 15 minutes of their arrival.

Talk about a waste of time. "Why won't anyone arrest us? :(((((("

Too soon?

By their logic, all burgstah flipstahs across the US deserve $15/hr, regardless of cost of living - next thing you know, the ones in NY and SF will start demanding $50/hr once they realize their peers in Bumf$ck, MO are able to get a nice big house with their $15/hr wage.

They use a microwave. Fast foods establishments stops cooking food onsite a long time ago.

But the burgers at Burger King are still "flame-broiled".

Ya in a factory! Or if they are HEATED-UP on site, their warmed in a conveyor belt style oven. Employees are not cooking anything by hand besides the fries.

The fast food industry has already stared rolling out self service kiosks, similar to your self check out lines at CVS or Shaws.

When my father coached HS football, he once went to BK to try to get a bunch of burgers for a cookout (not sure why). BK said that you can't even prepare them on a normal grille because of the weird "flame broiling" chemicals they throw in them. So gross.

Then why do I see them flipping burgers in the back at my local McDonalds.

ALL food is cooked on site. It may be *partially* cooked (i.e. Nuggets) before it gets there, but all food is cooked there.

You must be thinking about Applebees and the like where most of it is microwaved stuff.

I would use the term "cooked" very loosely in this instance.

What is 'cooked'

Microwave?
Fryer?
Grill?

Does the food have to be RAW when its made to be 'cooked'? Its all by definition

PS - I should disclose that I used to be a McDonald's manager years ago (mid-90s). Not much has changed since then in terms of preparation. Except they no longer have a queue bin and food is assembled to order (patties are still cooked ahead of time but sandwich is assembled when its ordered), AND they now have an automated dispenser (and sometimes cooker) for the fries. But besides that, not much has changed. (at least from what I can see by peering into the kitchen)

You cant buy a big house anywhere near a McDonalds (and continue to feed and clothe your family) for 15/hr. ($30,000 a year before taxes).

Who says you should be able to feed and clothe a family on a single income? Vast majority of middle class households have two working parents and often can't afford to have kid(s) until the parents are in their 30s, why should low wage earners be any different? Two parents working $10/hour jobs can definitely raise a kid in a town where a house can be had for $80K or less (plenty of those out there - believe it or not, there's more to America than the W suburbs.) I'm not saying it will be comfortable, but it's definitely doable - $40K will go pretty far when your mortgage is less than $400.

Got a cite on that "vast majority" quote? No, you don't, you're blowing hot air. Anyone who uses phrases like "vast majority" is, pretty much by definition.

..on a single income?"

Why yes.. just who?

Don't you people realize you are supposed to deploy an entire family of 4 to engage in full time money grubbing?

Nothing is more important than ensuring rent seekers and other leeches are able to gouge to the max at all times with utter impunity.

So let's get Junior out there scrounging bottles and cans while Sis takes in some washing for her betters.

It's another form of right wing assholes talking out of both sides of their mouths. On one hand they'll clutch pearls about the decline of the traditional nuclear family and its destructive social impacts, particularly when some different colored other is involved.

But these grotesque impositions can be handily be canceled out when earning jealousy rears its imbecile head and then it's all about dispensing advice about how doable it is supposed to be.

Maybe it is, who knows? But the grotesque conceit and presumption coming from a corner that reflexively recoils in outrage whenever some other tries to tell it what to do is a thing to wonder at.

I'd love to see you live on $15 an hour, anywhere in the USA. Really, I'd love it.

Take that back, no I wouldn't because you'd be bitching non stop.

Says an average occutard. Now, Mr Occutard, will you please enlighten us as to how many shares of MCD are out there right now, what the dividend per share is, what will happen to the price of a share if the money that's currently being paid out to the shareholders is given to burger flippers instead, and most importantly, what's going to happen to your trust fund once the market starts tanking? Go ahead, I'll wait.

..right wing free market scum are always ready to fight to the last dishwasher to glorify the right of a landlord, bank or some other scum sucking thing to charge whatever it can get away with cuz FREE MARKETZ!!!

But when it comes to the other side of the trade, what people get paid, the sky is always falling.

Which side of their mouths is reality coming from? Or is it just another shabby idiot attempt to leverage neo feudalism in a way favorable to the lever pusher?

And then there is the squalid uncouth petty jealousy of these vicious bellowing dildos giving a shit about what other people get paid, especially when it's always some burger grunt rather than the swine they love who get paid gazillions to be a CEO of some ineptly run multinational.

According to the article, it looks like the union organized this and solicited for some workers to take time off from their low paying job for legitimacy (and also to get arrests on their record for "show" and more time away from work). Sketch

...when you've audited every attempt by every entity to sell a point of view.

Be sure to include budgets, tactics and a sketchiness index would be nice, maybe you could even make an app to sell?

While you're busy doing that I'll wait and resume pointing out the imbecilic hypocrisy of caring about what low end earners want while giving every other species of money grubbing beast a jovial pass.

I certainly would never begrudge whatever you earn for your accounting eyeglaze work. It is none of my business. It's only when we get to grotesque wealth confiscation and CEO excess that I even care and the easy remedy for that is to just restore Nixon era tax schedules.

"jovial pass", I love it. Well said!

Let's load all CEOs into a big rocket, shoot them off into the sun and give their money to the poor exploited burger flippers. Everyone is well aware of the fact that CEO salaries are completely out of control, but has it ever occurred to you that cutting those salaries to $1 and distributing the money to all the employees will usually result in a cool $100-$150/year raise, at most? Hardly something to brag about, is it? As for ridiculous corporate profits, did you know that they end up being distributed to the shareholders via dividends and/or stock appreciation? You know, shareholders like wall street fat cats, and your 401k plan? What do you think will happen when those ridiculous profits disappear? I don't think all those hard-working fellas in their mid 40s to mid 50s who haven't re-allocated into principal preservation funds will be too happy seeing their retirement accounts getting wiped out. But then again, those are old white men who vote republican - screw them, right?

Or at least share the drugs that are making you think that anyone proposes lowering CEO salaries to $1 and redistributing the results.

You're probably right that such a redistribution, if anyone were proposing it, would not have much effect, but that's because CEO compensation comes in other forms than salary, which is high visibility and easily taxed. The rich today get rich the old fashioned way: they steal it.

Most got vaporized after 2007.

This is almost like an auto generated assortment of right wing free market talking points that spin their way through geriatric worlds no longer connected to the day to day of it all.

But the remedy is easy. Restore taxation brackets to what they were under that vile liberal Nixon.

And that's generous. The even more vile liberal Eisenhower favored a more aggressive tax schedule for wealth hoarders.

Damn that reichwing nut JFK for cutting those tax brackets!

What do you do for a living so that you don't have to worry about saving for your retirement and silly things like 401k?

I live in a building for free as a super and get billable hours when I fix something.

I get small inheritance checks several times a year.

While everyone was grubbing money, I built social capital. All in all it wasn't a bad investment.

Living costs are pretty cheap when you don't want a car, don't have tuition debt, failed to make a family and don't give a shit about impressing anyone..

And as a nominal Christian Scientist, I don't give a shit about the health care travesty either. When my body gives out I'll die and preparing well for such is more satisfying than hoping you don't.

I figure if I make it to 70 that'll be fine and if I don't, "a brief parting from those dear is but the worst man has to fear..'

Bonus points if you know where that came from.

Reagan was the real champion of obscene tax breaks. JFK was just a teaser.
