A mechanical problem on an outbound Orange Line train ended with smoke in the front car and passengers ordered to evacuate at Haymarket shortly before 5:15 p.m. - bringing service towards Oak Grove to a halt and firefighters racing to the station as fast as they could during rush-hour traffic.
At 5:15 p.m., JahHills reported:
Orange line at Haymarket just came to a sudden stop, told to evacuate, smoke coming from first car, people screaming.
BFD found smoke, but no fire.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., T officials ordered passengers off a functioning train at State and used that to push the dead train
into the Mystic River to the Wellington yard for repairs.
Separately, a medical emergency at Ruggles caused delays on commuter-rail trains out of South Station that head that way.
