Smoker blamed for nine-alarm fire that displaced 54 in Allston

The Boston Fire Department says "careless disposal of smoking material" led to a fire last month that ravaged two apartment buildings on Harvard Terrace.

A spokesman says somebody discarded a still lit cigarette or cigar in an interior stairwell in the rear of 12 Harvard Terrace sometime in the early evening of Sept. 3. The fire spread rapidly up through the building and caused heavy smoke damage in two adjoining buildings.

Five firefighters suffered injuries battling the fire, two of them serious enough to require transport to a local hospital. Two bystanders were also injured.

My hatred for smokers just continues to grow.

I really hope this gets very wide play. I really do.

I DON'T hate smokers, but I DO hate the way that smokers have become so completely and totally selfish about disposing of their butts. Used to be that this was something that decent people simply didn't do; you might as well wear a sign saying, "I am a lowlife". Now, the large majority of smokers think absolutely nothing of pitching a butt just about anywhere, and simply can not be shamed out of it. It's dirty, disgusting, selfish and DANGEROUS behavior. I want this to get very wide play because I want the person who did this to KNOW they did it, and I want smokers who toss their butts to know what they're risking. I hope the person who tossed that butt loses ALL their sleep over this, for about the next twenty years.
