Snow? Did somebody say 'snow'?

David Epstein says there's a chance we could get some light snow Saturday into Sunday.

That must explain why Parks and Recreation crews have started stringing the Christmas lights on the Common this morning. Despite the fact it's not even Haloween and, more importantly, there are still a gazillion leaves on all the trees.

Are they Christmas lights or holiday lights? Aaaargh, so not ready for all that comes along with the season.

"Are they Christmas lights or holiday lights? "

Is there a technical difference between Christmas lights and holiday lights?

and you'll see them occasionally around Somerville and probably other cities and towns.

They're Christmas lights. I don't think my friends who practice the Jewish faith would appreciate it if the city started calling a menorah a holiday candelabra.

Personally, my family has always celebrated Christmas, and Easter for that matter, as secular holidays... Santa Claus, Rudolph, Easter Bunny, Easter egg hunts, etc. I understand that these holidays' origins are religious, but over the decades they've become mainstreamed and secularized for many. To pretend that Christmas and Easter aren't Christmas and Easter is kind of silly.

I would argue that the origins of those holidays are actually pagan and not religious. The religious aspect came later.

My family has also enjoyed tree and egg worship minus the religious aspect for generations. I was raised atheist (as in I was told that there is no God from a very early age), but my family still exchanges gifts on Christmas, and we decorate trees and put up lights. We just make a point of getting together, especially now that we all live in different states.

... are/were religions too. ;-}

Edit: "Christian" though I can also argue that early paganism wasn't exactly a religion as we think of it today.

Since when is putting lights in trees part of the Christian liturgy?

They were doing Winthrop Square park last week. I think they start early. And who's to blame'em. Last thing I'd want to do on late November day is scale a tree and string Christmas Lights.

easier to string lights in trees that are devoid of leaves - as would be the case in late November.

So, this means that if there IS snow, the weight of the snow plus the leaves will not only bring tree limbs crashing down all over the Common, but it'll bring down all those light strings too. Can't we get a turkey in there somewhere?

Wonder what traffic will be like as thousands of drivers act like they've never seen snow before.

No, No, No- BUT , we did have snow a few days before Halloween a few years ago.

It was actually on Halloween a few years back, about 2 inches, and we finished that winter with less than a foot of snow total I believe. I'll take that trade off.

27 inches at my house in western MA. Light fluffy stuff, fun to ski in, no big deal, gone a few days later.

Saturday into Sunday? It's Tuesday. There is puh-lenty of time for that forecast to change.

Right now, they're calling for snow showers. By Friday morning, they could be prediciting a blizzard.

Gentlemen, we have a dilemma here. Where do we put a man who's wrong most of the time?
Of course! The Weather Bureau!
from The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle(not the movie)

It's usually how that goes. When the forecast predicts six feet five days out we end up with a dusting. When the forecast starts with flurries, better batten down the hatches.

...maybe we'll get a blizzard!
(dang, roadman already made this comment...apologies)

I wouldn't mind snow. I actually prefer it to rain while I'm on long runs during the weekends. Besides, I'm kind of ready for it to start feeling like a real New England fall--and yes, that means some snow!

I guess it's the little kid in me that still gets excited for snow days, even though it's not exactly new to me. The most "tropical" winter I have ever experienced was living in NY state.

... Boston's weather. I lived in Georgia for almost 8 years -- and was delighted to move back to someplace with "normal" weather.
