According to Victory Programs' Facebook page, the displaced Long Island womens' shelter Joelyn’s Family Home has gotten a $25,000 matching pledge, so they're desperate for donations of any size. Follow the link to the donations page.

He needs to create an actual charity. Register with the government and then you can take as much as you want. Give yourself a nice fat salary and hire your family as consultants and fundraisers.

Don't believe me?

Kids Wish Network.- 2.5% of donations spent on direct aid.
Cancer Fund of America - 0.9% of donations spent on direct aid.

The list goes on.

I am not advocating you stop donating. But please educate yourself about who you are donating to. There are so many worthy charities that really need your money. But avoid the ones that advertise on TV while pulling at your heart strings.

The two charities you can donate to are:

http://www.stfrancishouse.org
http://www.pinestreetinn.org

Or, just call to go down to help in person, since they always need volunteers.

My favorite charity is Community Servings.

There is nothing wrong with the long island bridge, I'm thinking in case of an Ebola emergency , the Island will be reserved for Ebola patients ..

No more than it was an HIV hospital or Hep B or Hep C hospital, or would have been a SARS hospital.

The island lacks the facilities for proper universal precautions and containment.

That isn't how things are done anymore.

You can also check with Charity Navigator. It also lists the salary of the top five people in the organization.

Good and useful link. I've worked in places where the corpo shakedown for the United Way was more aggressive than any addled pan handler I've ever seen on a T platform. It was almost a condition of employment. Looking at that link, I see that the Michael Durkin President, CEO of the Massachusetts United Way makes more than $360K annually. And who knows what his expense account looks like.

Something to keep in mind next time they put up those posters in your break room.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Charity begins at home" doesn't it?

....Moxie. I often wondered if there is some behind the scenes agreement for United Way Corporate campaigns.

Back some 25 years ago my boss was the corporate campaign manager for our employer. He insisted on 100% participation from his direct staff. At the time, UW was broken down into more regional sectors. I had a huge personal issue with the local chapter and hence decided to never donate to them again. My boss would not take no for an answer....it reached a point when I told him that not one cent from my salary would be going to that fund (let alone the weekly direct deposit donation they were pushing); he suggested I find another employer . HR needed to intervene. It was a horrible experience. Needless to say, I followed his suggestion to find a new job and wasn't there all that much longer.

To this day; when I see the campaign poster go up I start to feel uncomfortable.

I put a filter on my work email to automatically trash any message containing the phrase "United Way." Works wonders.

I give to charity every year, but do so directly so they get all of my money. I see no need to allow the charity mafia to get their cut.

where the 'ceo' gets a salary well into the 6 figures. As part of his bonus plan, his kids private school tuition is also covered. They live in Marblehead.

Chew on that.
