Letter from Black Mass producers

Emily Murphy shows us the notice she got from the producers of Black Mass, the Johnny Depp movie based on the Whitey book by two former Globe reporters, not the script being worked on by Affleck and Damon.

Is Harvest Gold, you may be a winner.

You'd have to go to East Boston to find that. All the kitchens in Southie have been Yuppified with stainless steel Subzero fridges and Bosch dishwashers.
Apologies to those who are offended by "Yuppified".

I've been looking at real estate in Eastie for the last couple of years and everything's stainless steel appliances and granite counters. (Does no one realize that crap is going to be the new Harvest Gold and Avocado Green in 20 years?)

All my taste may be in my mouth, but I liked the look of those old avocado and harvest gold appliances of the 1970s. (Bet you never heard anybody say THAT before). All the current stainless steel looks so institutional. They look like industrial restaurant kitchens.

Yuppified is not a word...you mean gentrified...

My Southie kitchen is very much stuck in 1982, no dishwasher, no stainless. Maybe we should volunteer for the movie!

I think Harvest Gold and Avocado are more 70's. Black appliances were becoming popular in the 80's.

Matt Connolly should consult for any Whitey movie.

But the authors of the book on which this movie is based write for the Boston Globe, so it won't happen.

If you haven't caught Matt's blog posts on so-called press coverage of Whitey's trial, check it out. They're good reads.

I have been soured on any movie with Ben Affleck in it since I saw "The Town", so the upcoming movie about Whitey Bulger with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in it is one that i've put on my "don't see" list regarding movies.

Not long ago, I saw an interesting documentary about Whitey Bulger and the trial called "Whitey": The United States vs. James Bulger" , which played for one night at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. It was a good film, well worth seeing, and it seemed to really reveal and tell a true statement, if one gets the drift.

You should watch Argo if you get a chance.

To each their own, KellyJMF, but when I saw the previews/trailer of "Argo", I decided not to see it for at least 2 reasons:

A) I really don't like Ben Affleck that much, either as an actor, or as a person. He's also quite arrogant in real life, imo.

B) The film Argo is about a crisis that is of the United States Government's own making, and I don't want to watch a film
that glorifies government domination of other countries.

Where they used salvaged triple-decker parts to build the sets for Gone Baby Gone. It was totally cool how they made them look real - it was like a museum in there that summer.

Be aware and afraid! Film location managers will promise you everything under the sun, especially if you have a unique spot. When negotiating the compensation you should realize that, despite whatever you're told, if you don't have an ironclad agreement spelling out limitations there's a huge chance that the production will overrun your property and house with 100's of crew. In any and all weather.

I don't have specifics on cost reimbursements but I know I've never seen a house come out of a shoot the way it went in. It's not called the film industry for nothing. your location becomes the factory.

yes they take over your property and it looks like a storm ran through after they finish. they do restore everything based on photographs upon completion of work. there is often damage, but they are legally bound to repair or compensate you for the loss. you can always file a claim with their insurance company if you are not satisfied. there is a big difference between a big studio project and smaller commercials/indie films in the level of professionalism and financial resources. the compensation is on order of 3 months rent for two long prep/wrap days and 1 massive film day. take the cash, live with the few days of inconvenience and wait for the excitement of seeing your property on film. otherwise, just don't respond to the letter. it's a simple proposition. location managers do often talk a game that they are not capable of fully delivering.

I can't wait to see Whitey with 16 bracelets, a few layers of vintage shirts with the sleeves rolled halfway up the forearm, and a fedora!

actors with hair, makeup, costumes and CGI for different roles. That same fedora looked really out of place in Edward Scissorhands, Dark Shadows, and Alice in Wonderland.

It does raise an interesting question: what actor would you cast to play a younger Whitey? Depp would hardly be the first Hollywod actor to be a lot prettier than the real-life figure he played -- squinting at you, T.E. Lawrence -- but it does seem a stretch for him to play such an ordinary-looking thug.

I'm thinking the real Bulger more closely resembles Kurtwood Smith, who was memorable as a similarly sadistic scumbag earlier in his career (see the original RoboCop), but he's too old and too much of a character actor to open a picture. Liev Schreiber, maybe? He's already got the accent down (not perfect, but not embarrassing) for "Ray Donovan". Who else ya got, UHub casting agents?

will it evah end? Why are people so fascinated by scumbags like Bulger or Jordan Belfort?

No, evah isn't a typo.

(and I'm sure if Wacko somehow reads it, he'll freak. I'M NOT GAY DOOOD!)

The only net Wacko surfs is the one they dropped over him. Though I imagine he does find the Gay sudoku while on the shitter.

Not all the homes are yuppified as you call it. Many people have been living in there homes and still are after 60 years. So unless you know everyone in Southie than you should not say things that are not true.
