Walsh to veto Council raises

The Dorchester Reporter alerts us that the mayor will say nay to the raises the council voted itself a couple weeks ago.

However, the $20,000 raise - which would also mean pension increases for councilors - got enough votes to show the council could override a mayoral veto. The raises would go into effect in 2016, which might be soon enough to save the councilors from poverty.

I solid move from the new mayor, it was smart to stand up the council even though I am sure it lost favor with them.

At least according to Eugene O’Flaherty.

"The city’s corporation lawyer, Eugene O’Flaherty, issued a statement after the vote saying that the council lacked the authority to overrule the mayor on spending issues."

If it goes in effect in 2016 it technically is no longer a spending issue since it's not applicable to current budget

The Mayor will need to build some bridges to get his budget past, or at least turn a few of the pro-raise councilors around - maybe we'll get the mounties back.

Walsh just has to wrap himself up in the citizens who are glad he just cut these turkeys off at the knees.

He just made a stand with sanity and the voters will thank him for it and he knows that. The councilors will get beat next election by anyone who stands up and says "I'm with Walsh on that one".

How dare you confound politicians with our noble species!

As much as I'd like see some new blood from Southie, idk who's going bump him. Maybe if Chinatown and the South End start to throw their weight around - but, I'll only believe that when I see it.

Council President Linehan represents the out of date Boston City Council lack of openness. Still hidden are the a) Full Transcript of Captions for hard of hearing, deaf, ESL English as a Second Language folks from the Webcasts of Public Meetings of Boston City Council and the b) Stenograph Record. A more interactive Boston City Council could make available a) the Full Transcript of Captions and b) the Stenograph Record letting people comment, send feedback, suggestions and questions to Councilors' remarks from the Public Meetings of Boston City Council.

Proto-Bletchley Park decoding, trial effort at converting the Stenograph Machine .sgstn StenoGraph StenoNote file

Also hidden are c) Council District Maps with Bordering Streets of Council Districts labelled clearly and d) the Boston City Council Library/Archives kept at too long an arms reach from municipal researchers. Digitizing the Collections of the Boston City Council Library would be a worthy project of historic preservation.
