We have our first lesson for the Red Line video the T needs to shoot

Train stopped due to gum spitting at Davis Square Red Line station

UPDATED with info from MBTA.

Don't use your phone right on the yellow line, because you might drop it and then the driver of the train will stop his train so your phone can be retrieved before it is crushed into a gazillion pieces.

Tim Devin captured the action around 8 a.m. today at Davis Square, where a T spokesman says:

A customer dropped her phone on the tracks, and an MBTA employee retrieved it before it was destroyed by a train. The customer did the right thing by asking MBTA personnel for assistance (as opposed to making an attempt to retrieve it on her own).

Are you kidding me? Conductor delays an entire train, and probably the entire Red Line, as a result of someone spitting gum? Don't get me wrong, spitting is a disgusting habit, but I don't think hundreds of people need to be delayed as a result. Common sense has left the building.

MBTA says the guy is actually retrieving a phone a rider dropped on the tracks. So still annoying (people: Don't drop your phone on the tracks, OK?), but not as stupid.

Smart phones making us dumb, numb unaware of our surroundings. Need apps to tell us Don't walk...Train coming..Vehicle approaching..... Too close to curb, tracks..etc.Walk, ride, drive assist. Robbery alerts.....GPS to remind you...you are still on the planet Earth! SMH!

I believe the intent is to make the offender's fellow commuters turn on the offender for effecting the delay with his disgusting habit:

Yeah if you toss something in front of an oncoming train, no matter what it is, I'd consider that suspicious activity that would warrant stopping a train full of passengers to check.

Yeah, you never know what kind of high-powered explosives might be contained in a little lump smaller than a nickel.

Espically if you witness it in a tunnel while piloting a massive train at 30mph (or however)

not being such a sensitive snowflake?

I munch on pumpkin seeds, at some point you gotta spit them out; I spit as discreetly as possible in order not to unduly upset the snowflakes.

... I guess don't eat anything in public spaces that requires spitting stuff on the ground in public spaces.

I wonder, does a public seed detritus spitter spit on his floor/rug if he ears pumpkin seeds at home?

Snowflakes? If you think you're entitled to spit your food waste on the ground wherever you like, then pot, meet kettle.

I would't just casually spit on a sidewalk or around lots of people. I generally spit out my seeds into a gutter.

The sensitive control freaks are getting worse and worse. Our society has become far too sterile and most people imo are too detatched from our real environment. Thry want everything to be like Disney World, a shopping mall, or some fantasy version of life they saw on TV, movies, even video games.

Perhaps one day soon the customer will make an attempt to not throw her phone in the track pit on her own.

yeah I think this is less about them being nice to the idiot phone owner and more making sure it didn't derail the train or something

Unless the phone fell directly on top of the track, why would it be in danger of being smashed? Should have let the train pass and held up the next one to let an inspector fish it out.

I was working on a party boat and a girl dropped her phone over the railing and into the water. As I watched the lit screen sinking; she insisted we stop the boat to retrieve her phone. I was speechless.

The person was being smart in getting a mbta personnel and telling the incident that has happened. At least the service wasn't delayed that much. Otherwise, it would be the announcements playing Red Line is experiencing delays due to a train crushing a cell phone on the tracks at Davis square station. Please allow extra time for your commute. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I had the pleasure of being packed into a Green Line trolley in a fashion that left me as close to the windshield as a passenger can be.
Couldn't believe the people encroaching on and not moving from the yellow line as we entered stations.

Do the math: a trolley isn't getting to you quicker when the driver is worried about hitting you as he pulls in.

Back up and let the drivers do their jobs.
