In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts today called on state lawmakers to swiftly pass just-introduced legislation that would help analyze and address the problem of racially biased policing in Massachusetts. "An Act Relative to Traffic Stop Data," introduced by state Rep. Byron Rushing, "An Act Relative to Pedestrian Stop Data," introduced by Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, and "An Act Relative to Traffic and Pedestrian Stop Data," introduced by state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, would prohibit racial and other profiling, make data collection about police-civilian encounters routine and uniform, make the data available to the public, and help police departments identify problems and guarantee fair treatment of all residents.
