Line on Newbury Street in the Back Bay

Melissa Sullivan shows us the line outside the Newbury Street H&M, where people are dying to get their hands on some of the Balmain clothes worn by Kardashians and their ilk.

And of course people will buy tons of them only to resell them on EBay or Amazon Market for a significant markup.

There's not much of a reseller's market for H&M swag, even if it is a collection.

Did you see the run on Missoni et al for Target a few years ago? This will sell, even if it IS garbage.

slackjawed over this.

I keep rewatching this, keeping my eye on the woman in the red shirt and also the person who grabs the empty rack and tries her best to get away from the madness.

Rich people who want these things will spend the money to not have to actually spend time shopping for these things.

People with time and no money will participate in this spectacular spectator spectacle in order to get that money.

Kind of the end game of capitalism run amok and oligarchy.

Capitalism run amok? This has nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with people being obsessed with "reality" tv stars.

I think Swirly's referring to the reselling on Ebay phenomenon.

....couldn't you afford real Balmain? Isn't this stuff a knock off in terms of quality?

My clothing choice can elicit the same reaction, except that people tend to run in the opposite direction... I have actually acquired a certain level of fame within my entourage for my cluelessness and complete lack of interest regarding fashion and style. If I find it’s lying on the sidewalk or hanging on a chain link fence and it fits; I’ll happily wear it. If not, there is always the Goodwill outlet store on Harrison Ave. (that’s where they sell the stuff that didn’t make it to the regular Goodwill store). It’s the anti-Newbury St. and I find a lot of kindred spirits in that place; I love it

1. Almost everything you see on any given celebrity - but especially one with, shall we say, an uncommonly voluptuous figure like Kim Kardashian's - is extensively tailored. They don't just buy that off the rack and throw it on, believe it or not.
2. I haven't examined any of these clothes myself, but I know that H&M has been making their clothes much more straight-up-and-down in recent years. Their clothes are much more suitable for someone with curves like an arrow than for someone like a real-life Jessica Rabbit.
