Art for Boston's sake

The city today launched what it hopes is a 15-month conversation on how to boost art in Boston. Boston Creates will:

Provide an opportunity for Boston’s many communities and neighborhoods to create a cultural blueprint highlighting Boston’s strengths and setting innovative goals for the future. We’ll look at community organizations and individual artists; cultural spaces and facilities; our cultural heritage and communities; our festivals and events; and creative industries and occupations.

If you want to help drive the overall conversation as a member of the leadership council, or just want to volunteer to help lead discussions in your neighborhood, the site has a sign-up form.

Public Art

In Washington DC they've taken old police call boxes and opened up the top so that artists can paint a small picture inside. The result is really neat and a great way to re-use what otherwise could be an eyesore.

I've always thought Boston should encourage more murals from locals -- professionals and students. The city can buy the paint and supplies. Great way of showing community support and counter the stupid tags.

My complaint with the big mural downtown a few years ago had less to do with the content and more to do with the fact they were guys from Brazil who had no connection to Boston. It was a waste of an opportunity.
