A bit of smoke and a fight makes some people's commutes really bite

An Alewife-bound Red Line train developed some electrical issues shortly after 6 p.m. and that meant smoke at Central Square, so the train was taken out of service.

Around the same time, some young women got into a bit of a fight on the outbound platform at Chinatown just as a train was pulling in. The train was halted so police could clear up the affray, but, of course, that halted all the trains behind it.

Fights, fires, runaway trains is this anyway to run a railroad. I really enjoyed the news tonight to find out the Transit Police didn't know about the runaway train in Braintree until the Braintree police called them. How often are the police and fire departments not notified about T-emergencies?

Except it rarely actually "moves."

I'm already starting to feel bad for anyone who has to wait for a train on an outdoor platform this winter during these worsening MBTA problems and delays.

... there is (at present) effectively no shelter at all for people waiting for buses at the upper station. Maybe the roofing will be replaced by next winter....

The outdoor platforms in chicago have these amazing areas with heat lamps that run for about 5 minutes at a time with the push of a button. Man, how I would have loved one of those when I was waiting for the train at north quincy..

... why the MBTA didn't do this as well.

I'll take a vehicle that runs on-time first before all the bells and whistles, but I believe they do have these in place at a few locations. "Few" being the operative word, but I believe the bus shelter on the Silver Line at Washington and Herald has them, for one.

Several D-line stations have them, not sure about the other green lines.
