BPD lieutenant put on leave after allegedly smashing his pickup into a backhoe and walking away
Boston Police report a lieutenant in District C-11 in Dorchester has been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into a crash early this morning involving his personal pickup and a backhoe removing snow at Spring and Baker streets in West Roxbury.
According to police, around 2:35 a.m., a Nissan pickup collided with the backhoe and suffered major damage.
After the crash the operator of the Nissan abandoned his damaged vehicle in the roadway and left the scene without making himself known to the backhoe operator. The initial investigation indicated that the operator of the Nissan may have been an off-duty Boston police lieutenant. ...
Upon further investigation the owner of the Nissan, Boston Police Lieutenant John Earley assigned to District C-11 (Dorchester), was placed on Administrative Leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. Earley is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Property Damage. The operator of the backhoe was not injured and the Nissan was impounded by the Boston Police Department.
Earley lives in Roslindale, according to his LinkedIn page.
Both BPD's anti-corruption division and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office are investigating the incident.
Innocent, etc.

I'm sure this man was very sober indeed at the time of the crash.
You're sure
You know this how?
Because
you can always have your lawyer explain that you suddenly remembered that you had to visit your sick mother, give a donation to that orphanage down the street, really had to take a crap, was confused after that nasty knock on the head by the backhoe that was hidden by a snowbank (and possibly operated in a negligent manner), or any number of innocent reasons for running away like one of those shirtless fellas on "Cops."
On the other hand, if you're the kind of cop who maybe is a jerk to his underlings and colleagues and doesn't rate a whole lot of "professional courtesy," buying yourself some sober-up time might be more of a career-enhancing move than sticking around to explain why you hit the backhoe, slurred your words, failed the field sobriety test, and blew well over the legal limit.
So
You where driving the back HOE? Please take your meds, that rant was bizarre.
You must admit, it's an
You must admit, it's an interesting theory.
Well, the Globe did an
Well, the Globe did an investigation into all the MA police that have DUIs who face little to no consequences, and the best quote was from a police captain who said "they're humam". So, there is little chance this criminal will see any real punishment and he will be back on the government payroll any day now.
Were you drinking with the officer?
Otherwise, how do you know there was any alcohol involved?
He probably just went...
for a relaxing 2:30am drive and after smashing up his truck, he went for a leisurely stroll to gaze at the stars. Doubtful it was anything more than that.
Seriously
Obviously nobody knows for sure....but what sober, rational person severely damages their vehicle at 2:30 in the morning and just leaves it there?
In Fairness
The Globe did an investigation into all DUI cases, not just police ones, and found that judges broom them as a matter of course, so it's not like the police are being treated any differently.

Suspended with pay...
Of course he is. I'm sure a thorough investigation will exonerate this inebriated, er, innocent, man.
I feel for people that have regular interactions with knucklehead cops like this guy.
Union Contract
....says this guy MUST get a raise every year.
how do they get away with this???
How they get away with this
They get away with it by supporting each other. You won't do that for your cow-workers, and they won't do it for you, so none of you get the direct benefits of being organized, and have to get by on whatever crumbs your boss lets you have. You do get indirect benefits of the union movement of years ago, but if your wish comes true and the unions all disappear, you can expect those to go, too. Probably the first to go will be child-labor laws. Newt Gingrich and others have been advocating their repeal for years. Then you can expect paid vacations and holidays to wither away, along with all kinds of workplace safety and fair-pay regulations (already routinely circumvented at - for instance - WalMart). I hope you enjoy your future in the 19th Century!
Uh huh because workplaces in
Uh huh because workplaces in right to work states are just cesspools of Dickensonian gloom.
Last time I checked teen unemployment is at an all time high.
Unions protect bad cops
Unions protect bad cops, bottom line.
Also, I'm not in a union but have great benefits, paid vacation and healthcare, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
Wrong bottom line
The union protects all cops. Cops who are found guilty of crimes lose that protection. I am not saying unions are perfect or never protect people who don't deserve it, but it isn't their job to decide who that is. I am also not saying cops who commit crimes are treated the same as everyone else. They should be treated at least as harshly as civilians, but they aren't. That's not because of unions.
My point is in my previous comment. You would not have your benefits and vacation if a lot of union guys had not got their heads cracked winning those things. If you don't know that, you should.
Time's up
Unions had a time and a place, and that's in the past. The police officers unions hurt this state and this country. How much money do we pay in overtime to have cops sleeping on the side of the highway, or "working" a construction site in the city? Why can't we just hire flag men to do the same job at a fraction of the price? Unions.
How about this "hero" who the union supported?

Point a gun, while off duty, at three teenagers, sure seems like a level headed individual who should wear a badge. Thank god the union was there to appeal the firing and keep this thug on the streets. Let's also not forget about the 6 cocaine cops patrolling the streets of Boston. Fight the war on drugs, test positive for cocaine, no big deal, we have a union.
You mean paid vacation, at
You mean paid vacation, at the expense of the poor tax payers. Half these cops should be fired.
interesting that his Facebook
interesting that his Facebook page is suddenly removed....guess his union took at look at his FB rantings. Hopefully this is his "bottom" and he can get the help he needs.
