Around 4:30 p.m., people across the Financial District heard a loud boom. Those who happened to be on Federal Street in front of the Bank of America building, saw flames coming out of the rear tire well of an MBTA bus, followed quickly by the arrival of Boston firefighters, who doused the engine.
After they were done, T inspectors tried to figure out what had happened before the bus was towed away.

Per the security folks in 100 Federal, immediately preceding the fire, a construction dumpster was dropped - that was the loud boom. Very weird that the two things happened so quickly.

this makes alot more sense than a tire exploding. I was on a high floor in 100 summer when it happened and the rumble was way too fierce to be a tire.
Where exactly did the dumpster fall off of?
i work right near there
that booming sound of a dumpster being dropped happens regularly. i've never known if it was a single dumpster closeby, or if the dropping of dumpsters is routine, but i can report that it is extremely loud and does sound like an explosion. i'm surprised more people aren't alarmed by it.

Express Buses
These are the ones that barely function. They sit there idling and spew because they are neither modern or retrofit. They put them on the Inner Express routes that run from 100 Federal or from Haymarket because they only do a few hours a day.

I was on an 11 yesterday morning that kept stalling, and the bus driver unloaded all the passengers at Broadway Station at 6:05 a.m. and pulled the bus "out of service."

Bus was on Route 504, it was built in 2004 and was just put through a mid life overhaul last year.
You might be thinking of the Route 326, where some of the buses are the old high floor buses built in 1994. The Route 504 is assigned to the Albany St. garage and the only buses assigned to that garage are the 2004/2005 ones that were overhauled over the last couple of years. Route 326 is assigned to Charlestown Garage, which has a mix of new hybrid buses, 2006 low-floor buses, and still a few of the 1994 high-floor buses.
