Cops to lock down Kenmore Square, Boylston Street in the Fenway after the third quarter on Sunday
In a message to students, BPD Commissioner William Evans says play nice and don't do anything you wouldn't want your dean of students to find out about:
The Boston Police Department, in the interest of general public safety, has requested certain temporary parking and access restrictions to several locations in the city both due to the Superbowl event and the recent storm. These traffic restrictions cover many streets in/around the Brighton area, Kenmore Square, Northeastern, Faneuil Hall and North Station areas. Please pay close attention to signage. Additionally, there will be restrictions on when and where people can move about on Sunday, February 1st beginning at approximately 6:00pm. Kenmore Square is one area that will be shut down after the third quarter of play. Boylston and Hemenway Streets will be affected as well.
Also, Allston Village Main Streets reports a parking ban goes into effect at 2 p.m. on Harvard Avenue between Comm. Ave. and Cambridge Street and on Brighton Avenue between Allston Street and Chester Street.

Awesome
The ability and willingness to lock down large swaths of the city for nebulous security reasons will play well with the IOC.
Also: I bet the #BlackLivesMatter protestors appreciate the heads-up of where large numbers of local cops will and won't be pre-deployed that evening.
Just a hunch, but I can't
Just a hunch, but I can't imagine the officers themselves are excited to be working instead of watching the game, freezing, hoping they aren't knee deep in snow and drunk college kids by the end of the fourth quarter.
$$$
Yeah I heard that cops hate getting paid large amounts of overtime.
You just not be a municipal
You just not be a municipal or state worker otherwise you'd have a better understanding of enjoying overtime.
Overtime is more enjoyable when not much is required of you. Corralling a bunch of drunk college students doesn't fall into that category.
cry me a river
I certainly wouldn't mind average of $19,969 in overtime per year. Regardless of its enjoyability.

Andy in allston....
You seem to mind just enough not to be a police officer though. Nothing is stopping you from applying.
He probably doesn't want to
He probably doesn't want to be in a position where he can be forced to work overtime on a cold Sunday night in the middle of the winter.
BPD rejected my application :(
My job often requires evening work outside during the winter. I actually did apply to the BPD years ago, but they wrote back saying they don't take commie/pinko scum.
No military history,
No military history, documented PTSD, authoritarian attitude, and probably too smart to be accepted.
Or too cowardly like you.......
someone who can't even get a screen name.
You're a disgusting human...
And I mean that as a compliment.
Justified by past behavior
Its not nebulous at all. If people had behaved better in the past maybe I could agree with you, but the sad reality is that a few bad apples have destroyed property and acted irresponsibly and unsafely in the past in similar situations.

Police
Unlike in the past the students now feel deflated about the sport and it's unlikely there will be any pressure to riot.
In all seriousness a large police presence is called for but a full lock down pre-riot seems to be going too far. It's the police who have killed someone, not the drunk college kids.
I wasn't justifying past police behavior
and I didn't say that the celebrants killed anyone. But car flipping, etc is not OK.
Car flipping is harmless
Car flipping is harmless until the gasoline runs free , ignites , and a firefighter gets toasted .
I disagree
That flipped car maybe someone's transportation. Someone who may not have paid the extra for car rental on their insurance. Someone who uses that car to get to a job outside of the city, not easily reached by public transportation modes.
Do I know someone like that? Yes I do. And yes, that person can get to their job by T and bus, but it takes an hour and costs $9.45 one way. By car the trip is 30 minutes and a bit of gas.
It's not as simple as you make it out to be, even if you're being flippant.
ETA ... oooohhhhh I just saw what I did there after hitting 'save'. smh
Adorable!
Car flipping is harmless
'til somebody loses an eye.
A man did die near NU after
A man did die near NU after the Pats won in 04. Not killed by cops, but an SUV fleeing rioters. BPD has done their homework since, and denying access to an area where people are known to congregate is an accepted tactic in shutting down potential college riots.
http://www.bostonmagazine.com/2006/05/anatomy-of-a-riot/
It's the police
responding to riots started by drunken fans who accidentally killed somebody.
FIFY
Accidently?
I believe recklessly is the word you want there.
The post-death inquiry found that the beanbag weapons were used in a manner that was entirely inconsistent with their use guidelines, design, and labeling.
That isn't accidental - that is reckless.
Um
So I stand by my original comment.
Seriously???
So, by chance, unintentionally, a police officer drew a beanbag weapon and fired it?
Boston is not supposed to be a police state
Whenever some frivolous college students go rioting, arrest them, and their university will have them expelled or suspended.
New restrictions on civil liberties for everyone, in the name of "security", is such a bad idea.
Go Seahawks!
...meathead sports fans ruining my city. Just another reason to cheer for the Seahawks.
Thank god the city didn't let the Patsies build a stadium in Boston.
Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.
Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.
I would love to see Boston
I would love to see Boston area college students represent well during the superbowl. Typically, if you live in a city and must deal with the additional challenges this presents, you're forced to behave with a little more common sense and maturity. Obviously past Red Sox wins haven't gone well, but I have to believe that the current crop of students have learned from their predecessor's asinine beahavior.
Rightfully so !
Rightfully so !
BPD really loves using its
BPD really loves using its proximity to Northeastern as an excuse to put the entire campus on lockdown. Seriously, why don't they give another university a hard time for once?
You mean like BU, Emerson, BC
You mean like BU, Emerson, BC, Berklee, Suffolk, or any of the other dozen universities located in the list of places they're locking down?
Actually, this is excellent timing
No parking on Brighton Ave after 2 PM? Good. Still plenty of snow narrowing the street. 8 hours to breakout the backhoes and dump trucks.
(No subject)
Yes!
A few years ago when Mumbles was Mayor and Pats were in the Super Bowl and they banned the parking they got the bright idea of sweeping the streets. It was a most excellent idea getting the mid-winter crud out of the gutters. The Pats lost and nothing happened but we got clean streets.
This was all a reaction to when the Pats won the first time and there was basically a riot on Symphony Rd. where at least one bystander got killed when a driver got panicked by the mob scene and raced down the street, and a car got overturned and burned. So it kind of makes sense.
Basically you have to get your car out of the way so it won't get trashed. I hope they use the opportunity to cart away some of the snow but I'll consider that gravy.
A great opportunity
They can get some front loaders in there and some trucks, and get rid of some of the snow!
"Fleet Center"
Di anyone else catch Commish Evans referring to the area around the "Fleet Center" during the Q&A?
Some People Resent The Name "Toronto Dominion Center"
( what did you think "TD" stands for? )
Is there a good set of
Is there a good set of resources for where the parking bans? Its not mentioned in the BPD blog post for example ...
This is silly
It's freezing cold and it's going to be snowing. That's sufficient to keep the crowds down.
Sunday?
Saturday will be nasty, but Sunday will be sunny and near freezing.
Sunday night is forecast to
Sunday night is forecast to drop to 10 degrees. Even the Bills the Science Guys call that "well below freezing".
i dunno what time the sun sets in Medfart
but Idina Menzel sings the national anthem at 6;30 pm, after which the game begins....It will not be sunny in boston at 6;30 pm.
Forecast was revised
An earlier forecast had the overnight low on Sunday as 4F/2C higher than the daytime high on Saturday. Now the post-game predicted temperature is around what the forecast daytime high is for Saturday.
In any case, the prior and revised forecasts were for snow tomorrow and clear weather on Sunday - even late at night.
Sunday overnight snow
is now predicted not to begin until 4AM on Monday morning, per latest NWS forecast.
CITATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya, sure.
Rhymes with
I'll keep the torch on for ya.
Not necessarily
If it was raining or just plain cold I could see fewer kids going out. But winter wonderland + lots of drunk, rowdy college kids = not a good situation. There will inevitably be students climbing up and pushing each other into snowbanks, lots of snowballs thrown, and plenty of potential for things to escalate from there.
Never seems to stop
people who sit in those stands at Gillette.
The booze helps.
The booze helps.
What happens if you live in the locked-down area?
Are you seriously not allowed to leave your house, or, conversely, not allowed to return to your house?
Does anyone know how this is
Does anyone know how this is handled? This could cause a huge disruption to thousands of people's lives.
Back in the day
I lived in Myles Standish Hall (where Bay State forks off Beacon at Kenmore Square) in 2004,-2005, and my now-husband lived across the street from it from 2006-2011. So we've been through a good number of these Kenmore Shutdowns for sports events.
1) Well before the game starts, the set up a perimeter and start carding people, saying that if your address doesn't match your ID you can't go through. This was *awesome* for us college students who lived in dorms and had no ID that had our local address on it.
2) After the game, the police march in a phalanx formation and clear the streets. If you are on the streets, they tell you to get off them. Even if you live there or are passing through to go to your proper home, you cannot be on the street. Even if getting off the street means trespassing onto property that is not yours. If you do not comply, they will club you to the ground. (I saw this happen because I was watching from the fire escape. Heard the whole thing.)
If you live there, either plan on staying inside your home, or staying out and not returning until well after the game is over. It is *a lot* safer to drive than walk or bike, because the cops are less likely to attack a car.
So yeah, that's how they handle it.

What?
No Popeye's?
