Corpse of Filene's Basement to be re-animated as bargain Web site

The Boston Business Journal reports the company that bought the Filene's Basement name at bankruptcy thinks enough people will be nostalgic about the name to buy stuff from a shopping Web site it's setting up.

No, probably not. I miss the Basement. Where else could you see people fight over bargains and women undress right in the aisle. As a kid I would just watch in awe at the crowds in the basement and hang onto the back of my mothers coat like my life depended on it. Granted, it hadn't been the same for years, but just walking down those stairs was like entering a new world.

I loved hiding an item and see if it would still be there the next week. Loved the automatic discounting.

No, the web site will be nothing like it.

Because that would be something: A virtual basement filled with clothes, where you and the other avatars could fight for the bargains - and the winner then gets taken to the order form for the particular item.

Reminds me of my early MUD days in the early '90s...

Yet, the thrill of going to the dress sale just won't be the same.

I'll check it out, but don't have any expectations. Only shoppers of the real Basement can understand what the hoopla was about. When I went to Filene's Basements in suburban malls or far-flung cities like Chicago I saw that the other Basements were just crappy picked over discounts stores. It's just a brand name that will be slapped on another one of the innumerable online clearance sites.

I miss the shopping adventure that was The Basement!

I think they would be smart to try some sort of automatic markdown system online. People would keep an eye on items they wanted hoping it would still be there when the next markdown was to occur. They would keep coming back to the site to check. It could really keep people engaged and differentiate the site from any others.

Until bots and script kiddies ruin it like they have Ebay.

is doing far more to ruin the site than bots and script kiddies ever have.
