Dark skinned people get skin cancer too. But i dont think giving out lotion at parks is a good idea.
think about it though
Someone uses the sunscreen in a park and they allergic to something in it and have a really bad reaction then sue the city. Being organic while not fool proof greatly reduces that risk.
Organic vs. Inorganic sunscreen
Organic sunscreen means something totally different to me. I'm allergic to chemical sunscreen. A chemical sunscreen has an active ingredient like avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone or Mexoryl. Those are organic compounds created in a lab.
I can wear physical sunscreen (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide). They are inorganic compounds.
So, Councilor, which definition of organic is it? The one from Chemistry class or the one from Whole Foods?
Being organic
Organic has nothing to do with calming allergy reactions. In food, it's a knee-jerk reaction to layman's understanding of pesticides and has been borne into an overwrought segment of the market that has nothing to do with actually eating healthier. Because the word "organic" carries such a "healthy" weight there, it has made its way into other stupid places in consumer culture.
In this case, organic means it's carbon-based protection instead of zinc or titanium-based. Instead of reflecting UV light, it attempts to absorb it. It doesn't mean the sunscreen was caught on a free range farm or modified to prevent allergies. People have allergies to benzophenones and oxybenzone is primarily used in organic sunscreens as a replacement for zinc and titanium in the inorganic suncreens. So, inorganic is actually the less risky choice.

People do have these. Best to leave most of the botanical stuff out, and avoid the fragrances (organic or "inorganic") too.

What you say makes sense, but most denizens of uhub would rather be the braying jackass kicking down the barn (ANY barn, but if they can snark about those damn yuppie hipster kids on their lawn while they do it, so much the better) than the carpenter who's trying to build it. This is recreational outrage, and you're just ruining their fun.

it's possible to work on more than one thing at a time. But O'Malley is my city councilor. He seems to only be interested in these lightweight feel good things. If we wants to do these and some substantive work on serious city issues (enforcement of laws, traffic, hopeless snow removal, some kind of plan for the city that is not just let the developers do what ever they want are just a few things that come to mind.)
And I would put water fountains way above sunscreen as things that are important to proved to the public. Just because some company is donating it doesn't mean it's a good idea.
And I've never voted for him. I dearly wish someone with some substance would run against him.

The overreaction on here to this relatively benign proposal has been a sight to behold.
It's expending time and resources
on something that is intended to solve a potential problem that, based on the current statistics, will affect about 0.02% of the population.
And it's currently intended to be funded by allowing some commercial enterprise another opportunity to force their advertising messages down our throats. But I guess, as long as private industry is funding this, it doesn't really count as a total waste of money in most people's eyes.
Given the far more serious problems the City and the State are facing (the MBTA crisis being only one of them), the City Council should be ashamed of themselves for even considering this wasteful and pointless gimmick. That's why most uHubbers are debating this whth such fervor.
Skin covers your entire body.

Water fountains and toilets please
So add another item to monitor / clean / fix to city parks when a. Many parks dont have working water fountains b. For the lucky parks that have bathrooms - soap paper towels and working hand dryers may be missing. Let's focus on getting the basics done.
And besides , isn't wearing a hat or long sleeve shirt a better idea than slathering yourself or your child in chemicals?

You slather your child in a chemical called water every day, I'll bet. And other chemicals that make up soap and laundry detergent.
Most hats do not provide
Most hats do not provide shade for your entire face. Do you wear long sleeve shirts in the hot summer heat? I didn't think so.
Talk to a dermatologist. You should be wearing sunblock on the exposed parts of your skin when you're out during the hours of 10 - 4 for any extended period of time. Being out for even 20 minutes at a time in high UV conditions day after day, month after month, year after year causes cumulative damge to your skin. If you have fair skin and light-colored eyes you are at greater risk. These are the facts.
I have had skin cancer, thanks
I grew up spending summers on Cape Cod before we knew that getting really bad sunburns would cause skin cancer later on. So far I've had two bad moles removed and my derm and I are fairly certain that I'll get melanoma at some point. All we can do it hope to catch it in time. This is all from damage done before I even became a teenager.
My problem with this idea is that plenty of people are allergic to a specific kind of sunscreens (see my explanation and Kaz's for more detail). People might not know that they have allergies until they slap the goopy, warm (and no doubt cheap) sunscreen all over their faces and arms and start breaking out in hives.
But hey, thanks for the post anyway. You just reminded me that I'm about due for my twice a year checkup at the derm to check for cancerous or pre-cancerous moles.
