DA: As man lay on Old Colony Avenue, shot, his GPS-wearing killer pumped several more bullets into him

Two men were ordered held without bail today on charges they murdered Maurice Scott, 38, on Old Colony Avenue in South Boston Saturday night. A third man, allegedly a passenger in their getwaway car, was charged with possession of crack with intent to distribute.

According to Assistant Suffolk County District Attorney Mark Hallal, Boston and State Police found Scott laying on the ground around 8:30 p.m. next to his girlfriend's Mercedes-Benz outside 425 Old Colony Ave. A witness said he spotted Scott already on the ground when "a very large man" with "very large thighs" shot him several more times as he lay there, then hopped into the front passenger seat of a car that made a U-turn on Old Colony and sped towards Dorchester, Hallal said. Police recovered nine spent .40-cal. shell casings, Hallal said.

Scott was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he died a short time later, Hallal said at their arraignment today in South Boston Municipal Court.

As police investigated the murder scene, officers over in Dorchester responded to a report of a car and occupants doing something odd on Elm Street: A car roared down the short street and pulled up in front of a vacant lot there. And then the lights went off and then the three people inside seemed to be changing their clothes, Hallal continued. One of the men then got out and, as he did, appeared to pull his shirt down, as if he had just put it on, the witness told police.

Police quickly surrounded the car, ordered the men out, Hallal said. The Old Colony Avenue witness was taken to the scene and while he told police he could not recognized faces, he recognized the front-seat passenger, later identified as Dewayne Diggs, 24, of Randolph by his large build. On Elm Street, he was wearing a gray hoodie, but police found a dark hoodie in the car - which the witness said he'd been wearing during the shooting, Hallal said.

The prosecutor added that officers found the apparent murder weapon in the vacant lot. A thermal imager showed it had been held recently, later testing showed the casings found on Old Colony matched it, he said. He added it had a capacity of 11 bullets - and that it only had 2 bullets in it.

Hallal said Diggs and Dondre Snow, 22, of Dorchester, who allegedly drove the car, both had GPS monitors on - they were both out on various charges in other courts - and that data from the trackers put them on Old Colony during the shooting and Elm Street during their search.

Daquan Peters, 20, of Roxbury, had his bail set at $100,000 on a charge of possession of crack with intent to distribute.

Hallal did not provide a possible motive for the killing.

The three stood behind a door rather than standing in the courtroom prisoners' dock. They took turns peering into the courtroom, though; at one point one of them attempted to mouth something to somebody sitting in the courtroom.

Innocent, etc.

Our justice system has failed when felons wearing GPS bracelets feel they can commit heinous crimes with negligible consequences.

This is becoming an increasingly frequent and highly disturbing occurrence.

Crime overall is going down each year but the few criminals remaining are getting worse and worse.

How do you know that's not simply some form of selection bias?

This is another heinous crime.

What I was struck by, however (because this kind of crime has become so commonplace, that the crime itself is not enough to be struck by), is what appears to be to be really good police work. I particularly found the thermal imaging thing interesting. I had absolutely no idea that this was something that is apparently routinely done.

Lastly, I have a difficult time understanding how anyone could be so stupid or so care-free to (allegedly) be a part of this while wearing a GPS bracelet.

Seems like I've been reporting more and more of these cases lately. I don't know if I've just been paying more attention to that sort of thing or if there really is an upswing in such things, but it does make you wonder about the efficacy of them if people wearing them are just going to go out and commit more crimes. Hmm, sounds like a possible story ...

The person charged with the August (?) 2014 rape in the Arboretum was identified by police because they tracked the GPS bracelet he was wearing as a condition of being out on bail on another rape charge.

There are lot of people that have electronic monitoring as a condition of release. That means they haven't been convicted of anything. There is a limit to the conditions that can be set.

These situation are horrible, but there are also other situations. Where people have been accused of serious crimes and need to keep working and caring for their family's while they defend themselves.

The device now gives the police and prosecutors hard evidence to be used in court.

Clearly it is effective, at catching them the second time around. I think there'd only be something for people to get upset about here is if, after idiots like these are re-arrested, they actually make bail or get out on probation/parole again with a GPS bracelet. Then something clearly isn't working in the system, someone isn't paying attention.

At least on a first reading, it looks like this case was made because one witness have a good description at the scene and another witness reported the suspicious car in Dorchester. So, yes, good police work and good GPS evidence, but THANK YOU to the people who pointed the cops in the right direction.

and the third Daquan Peters is out walking the streets 9 months after being caught with an illegal firearm with the serial numbers scratched off.

Who also has gun related charges dating back to 2012.

When do we start holding criminals accountable, after they finally murder someone?

until this:

And is......wait for it....an aspiring rapper.

What does that have to do with your earlier statements and conclusion about holding people responsible? Hint: don't dig further by giving a Louise Day Hicks style answer.

Because some styles of rap music promote thug life and gang life and gun violence and violence toward women and violence toward ....everybody. And wasn't there an east coast vs west coast rap war that claimed the lives of two rappers in gangster-style murders (tupac and big e smalls) an wasn't one of the founding fathers of rap murdered outside his studio in a drive by shooting. So it is worth noting.

This. And some people are actually dumb enough to brag about their criminal behavior in their rap music and upload it to YouTube. Just read this for one blatant example.

In this Youtube video (not safe for work), a self-styled rapper calling himself “J-Creek” opines about not being able to find enough drop hoes to help him cash out $40,000 in phony tax refund deposits to prepaid debit cards. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to pop music (let alone rap) but I think this work speaks for itself (if rather lewdly).

Here are a few choice quotes from the song (I cut out much of it, and someone please correct me if I somehow butchered the lyrics here). I think my all-time favorite line is the one about the role of Intuit’s TurboTax: “She got them stacks then went tax on the turbo.”

But why should black singers have all the fun?

Let's start doing this with white performers, too! They love singing about murdering people in bar fights (Jim Croce), advocating illegal drug use (the Beatles), even promoting suicide (Blue Oyster Cult, Evanescence) and making fun of people with mental problems (Pink Floyd). And they're well noted for their own involvement in illegal activities (from Altamont to, most recently, Scott Weiland and his heroin addiction).

You're dating yourself a bit there, Adam.

Anyway, Jim Croce never murdered anyone in a bar fight. The jury is out on the Beatles' drug use (Sgt. Pepper notwithstanding), nobody from BOC or Evanescence killed themselves (or anyone else), and Wish You Were Here was an entire album made in devotion to one of Pink Floyd's founding members who had severe mental issues.

You really can't compare this stuff to these idiots on YouTube bragging about their (real) violent crimes. On top of that, the majority of the music these particular individuals release is centered on violent and illegal activity.

What happened to the MANDATORY minimum for this stuff? No wonder criminals don't care - there are barely any consequences.

Meanwhile, a clean-record citizen will get slapped with restrictions on their LTC, because that somehow makes Boston safer.

for selling $350 worth of marijuana to a police informant who claimed that the dealer had a gun- which the informant also mentions he never brandished. even the judge that presided over the case asked for the sentence to be commuted.

i could go on and on but i dont think i really need to.

Edit: it is worth mentioning that no firearm was ever found

Edit2: another interesting one- there is a person serving a 200 year prison sentence for having ~20 child porn photographs.

also: there is no possibility of parole if youre sentenced to federal prison time. there is also a lot of data that illustrates there isn't a benefit with regards to harsh sentencing reducing crime and rates of recidivism

What do you think of this particular case in regards to recidivism?

if you isolate a situation that goes against the norm and pretend like it isn't an aberration for the sole purpose of proving some point then you have some serious mental issues. or you're just not intelligent. i don't know you well enough to have an opinion on either of those

Or better yet, have his trials occurred yet?

Sorry, but if his cases haven't gone to trial yet, the "walking the streets 9 months after being caught" means nothing.

The "holding criminals accountable" part of criminal justice entails actual trials, convictions, and sentencing.

If he was tried as an adult on the first count and it went quick, he'd be out in time for the second incident, since the most he would get is 2 and a half years. I don't see the second case going to trial yet.

Of course, he was a minor in the first case, so a gun possession charge would put him in juvenile courts at the time.

ok the 'Black Lives Matter' movement has absolutely nothing to do with this tragedy!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!

Black Lives Matter is a movement that brings awareness to policy brutality against Black African American people in America .(No, I am not apart of the movement but before you speak on something you should know what you are speaking on)

There are WHITE ON WHITE crimes that happen daily as well, there aren't any ignorant comments stating "another cr***ker c**t killing everyone because his daddy didnt buy him a new Ferrari"

"It is reckless to make broad generalizations about any group of people"

This is a HORRIBLE tragedy, for ALL FAMILIES involved especially the victims.
You people have no respect for the families in mourning when you troll on the internet with your ignorant racist comments. Get over yourselves!!!

My sympathy and condolences to the victims family, and I pray for ALL families that are mourning loved ones in any way.
