DA: Revere man smashes through window, takes young relative hostage, struggles with police, is tased, dies

The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on a 38-year-old Revere man who died after a struggle with police last night, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The unnamed man's only apparent physical injuries at the time seemed to be cuts from having smashed through a window at the apartment building on Winthrop Avenue where police found him, the DA's office says:

The man, who had been hospitalized for a mental health evaluation after another incident last week, had apparently smashed through a window near the door of a Winthrop Avenue apartment building that was not his residence and forced his way inside with a young relative. Revere Police responded to find him in a stairwell bleeding and combative, but he eventually released the child. The man continued punching, kicking, and biting officers and at one point broke and attempted to jump through a window. Officers used a Taser on the man to no apparent effect. After multiple officers were able to handcuff him and lead him out of the building to a waiting ambulance, where he was restrained on a stretcher by emergency medical technicians to prevent him from injuring himself or others in the ambulance. In light of his mental state at the time and his commitment just last week, he was transported to the Whidden Hospital, where he died. Clinical staff did not observe physical trauma beyond the lacerations he is believed to have sustained by breaking the two windows, but the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death.

This story got overshadowed in other media outlets by the Beverly police shooting of a likely mentally unstable man yesterday. There must be a better treatment option than police putting down the mentally ill with tasers and bullets. (or sending them to the Whidden)

That happened and has been spun through the news cycle already. No overlap with this story, no media companies choosing which story to endorse. This latest made the Globe and the TV news yesterday (when it happened) so I don't know why you think there is a difference. Don't bite the cops, kids. Bad things will happen.

"There must be a better treatment option than police putting down the mentally ill with tasers and bullets."

I think the 'taser' option is supposed to be non-lethal. Usually, there's another factor, like heart problems or drugs.

If you have another option, I guess the Suffolk County DA's office would be glad to listen.
