Danny Schechter the News Dissector dies at 72

Dan Kennedy reports the death of Danny Schechter, best known locally for his news reporting on WBCN. Samuel Kopper, who worked with him at WBCN, writes:

For us at WBCN, he was a dear friend, a leader in gaining and maintaining the rightful place and respect for workers in all positions in the company, the family. During his on air pieces when WBCN Free Form Rock first launched, Danny told stories of being at the ends of the Earth, meeting people who knew him as WBCN's "News Dissector" MORE than they knew of him at ABC, CNN, or elsewhere. He was SO proud of what BCN was about in the halcyon years and his time there; and WE are SO proud and joyful to have been his friend and colleague.

I remember Danny Schecter well from the classic era of WBCN, before it started to decline in quality in the 80s. He reported incisively on current events that are now historic, such as the Attica State prison uprising. That was the great era of WBCN. Old Saxophone Joe, Jamaica Plain Jane, Maxanne...and great, great music.

Should be familiar to anyone who listened to his later reports on WBCN:

I always remember the night of the Nixon/McGovern election, as a high school student working in the back room of Star Market, hearing him say "The Nixon mudslide has begun". He was part of the great days of the old WBCN. His kind of candidness is hard to find in the news media nowadays.

Growing up, I knew that guys like Schechter would give a different slant to the story than, say, Cronkite or Tom Ellis. No disrespect to any "mainstream" news anchors of the day, but there wasn't a consensus of opinion among my peers until Schechter's type weighed in.

Rest in Peace, sir.
