A different kind of burger in West Roxbury

Cheesey burger and fries at BurgerFi in West Roxbury

Rich cheesey goodness at BurgerFi.

The BurgerFi recently opened on Spring Street, a couple doors down from Panera. Old timers could be forgiven for walking in and going "What's this doing in West Roxbury?"

Sure, West Roxbury's days as a place where your choices were limited to pizza, Irish-like food, Chinese takeout and more pizza are long gone, but still, this really feels more like the sort of burger place you'd expect in, oh, Chestnut Hill or Fenway than in a tiny strip mall on Spring Street, all light-wood paneling and metals chairs and tables, pop music coming out of the ceiling - where, when you look up, you see what is probably the biggest fan you'll ever see in your life.

And then you read the menu, which promises never frozen burgers (OK, Five Guys does that, too), from free-range cows. You can get "100% Wagyu Kobe Beef" hot dogs and even quinoa-and-cheese burgers for the vegetarianish set.

Inside BurgerFi

The burgers are, indeed, very good (the kidlet, however, said she still preferred Five Guys). The default is a two-patty deal, so unless you're really hungry, you might want to ask for the single version. Fries are also good, especially when coated in melted cheese because who doesn't like thick layers of cheese over everything? You can get soda in glass bottles or fountain soda from one of those computerized drink-o-matics that lets you choose from roughly 60,000 different flavors (or mix 'em all together!).

Oh, and, hey, unlike Five Guys, they have beer, thanks to the license they bought from the owners of a defunct Chinatown restaurant. And unlike at Five Guys in Dedham, the music is low enough that, if you do decide to eat in, you won't leave half deaf with a headache.

So worth a try if you're in a burger mood.

That's some fan:

I have to say, those burgers look really good. I'm not a fan of Five Guys, so my comparison will be with Tasty Burger. These have the right look, I hope to find out on taste before the weekend is over.

Looks like a Chipotle. Interesting. I'd try it if I happen to be in the neighborhood at lunch time. One thing I don't get though, what is vegetarianish? Is it a hamburger with quinoa or is it a vegetarian 'burger'?

It's a patty made out of quinoa with cheese poured on it, in a bun (although you can swap in a lettuce leaf for the bun).

Yeah, kinda Chipotle-ish decor, but I didn't wind up all depressed after sitting in it (Chipotle always makes me feel like I'm eating inside an abandoned factory; maybe the wood paneling in BurgerFi made the difference).

Trust me. I nearly get killed every morning crossing at the Shaws light. No lie, a NUN almost ran over a friend as she was running the light....

This is making me want to leave my comfort zone (Christopher's in Porter Square) and make like a tourist down around your neck of the woods. Love the idea of a quinoa burger, too.

Yes, I saw that. Mr Site Host's territory is sort of Terra Incognita to me, though.

As long as you're down this way, also check out:

The Reliable Trading Post on Park Street. It's a big old old-stuff place, and they'll gladly take cash, but you really can barter with them.

Millennium Park. Great views from the top of the "hill" (really just the flattened out top of the old city landfill) and nice paths along the Charles (just watch out for giant dogs bounding out at you from around trees and corners on the path - dog owners are already treating the whole place like their preserve even though it is not, in fact, an official dog park).

Brook Farm Historic Site - There's nothing actually left of the old utopian community, but it's a nice place for walking around in (there is one old building that went up after the community collapsed).

Stony Brook Reservation, a large state park with woods and a pond.

Actually, I agree that it's a pleasant place for runs and cycling, but a piece of local folklore is always added interest.

in Hyde Park (per the city's neighborhood boundaries).

And if you don't have cash for the Trading Post , just walk down to Centre street , where the A-Man's nemesis has an ATM at his bank.

Doesn't matter what bank you use, you're sure to find one with an ATM on good ol' Centre Street!

Its the closest to your bargain center , unless the Irish Social Club has one , and you are a member. Any luck , you might see your nemesis in the club......

A Civil War regiment trained there and one of the munitions brick storage rooms is still there. As you drive down the drive (to the cemetery) it's past the white building on your right. kind of a cave hollowed out of the ground with a brick front and a gate. I think there's a plaque there.

Also, if you walk around the munitions storage, you can see some old foundations. Not the actual walls old walls of the foundations, but the square holes in the ground and some (very little) remains.

Was not all that impressed my first try a few weeks ago. I'll give it another try.... Though the burgers down the street at West on Centre still linger on my palate... (BIG AND YUMMY!)

Is it "Burger-fee" or "Burger-fy" like WiFi?

We caught that it was open while driving to Dedham tonight. That question lingered beyond C.M.

Shake Shack. Presentation and taste of the Fries and Burger were just like Shake Shack with the exception of the 'branding' on the bun. Saw it by accident last week and went in. The burger is a 'double patty' unless you ask for a 'single'. Very good!
