This is probably an example of the state of reporting these days, but WHDH was reporting she was 101, WCVB reported she was 84, and CBS 85. Until the last one I was willing to be charitable and assume that we had a multi-generational family and it was possible that there was both an 101 and 84 year old woman living in the unit and there was some confusion about who was actually rescued. Now I'm left guessing that none of them really know what they're talking about...

So a reporter might have asked a random firefighter who took a guess at her age. This guess now gets reported as fact as the reporter can confidently say they heard it from a reliable source -- a "fire department representative". There is no follow up or fact checking in local news. There are no repercussions if they get the facts wrong.

Local TV news is for entertainment and tomorrow's weather, not facts.

Since if you look at the URL for the WBZ story, it says she was 101, but the story's been revised to read 85.

"Get me outta here."
"How old are you?"
"Eighty four"
"Bullshit."
"OK, one hundred one."
"That's more like it."

We don't want incorrect information to get out.
