Energetic weatherman quits Channel 7

Bouchard

New England One reports Pete Bouchard quit as chief meteorologist at WHDH yesterday.

He's already changed his Twitter handle (if not yet the Channel 7 background in it).

New England One stated: "We have not officially confirmed where Pete is headed to, but we hear it's to the new NBC Boston." Is WHDH-TV actually going to lose its NBC affiliation?

Yes. rumor has it that NBC will yank its affiliation with WHDH and move all the NBC programming to NECN (a NBC Universal-Comcast owned station) to become "NBC Boston"

It would be a bold move but there's virtually nothing stopping them from doing so.

I also hear that Maria Stephanos may also be at "NBC Boston" too.

The linked article suggests NBC would move to WNEU (Channel 60), displacing Telemundo, and leave NECN alone.

Either way, it would be a problem for those of us who still receive broadcast programming over the air and don't get a good signal on Channel 60.

Yeah. an article I read last night (from October) said NECN was a possibility. That is now false.

WNEU is a possibility also.. but where would Telemundo move to?

It wouldn't be the first time NBC moved its signal to a low powered station or a station on the edge of the market to gain a NBC O&O station

Read up on the KRON/KNTV Switcheroo in San Francisco. KNTV an NBC O&O station in San Jose, not San Francisco (and until recent years didn't provide a good enough signal to the city of San Francisco)

I've seen speculation elsewhere that this is NBC's way of putting up the theoretical casino and parking lot around channel 7 to get Ansin to sell to them- a CW 7/ independent 56 are worth far less than what he has at moment and a 60/ 46 duo may not be enough to cover the market for a major network

That's kinda my one of my points about KRON/KNTV. Like with KRON/KNTV.. NBC had all these demands and didn't like that KRON preempted programming, and wanted them to stop. (plus a few other demands like station branding)

Rather than cave, KRON just dropped the affiliate when the contract was up. Forcing NBC to buy KTNV, and 'fix it up' by beefing up it's news team, build a new studio (and moving the west coast CNBC studios to that new facility), plus a new transmitter closer to the city of San Francisco (to resolve coverage issues).

It's almost the same thing. NBC probably has some demands that Ansin wont agree with, in hopes he will just sell. And if not, NBC will beef up WNEU just like it KNTV with a new news department (i.e. Stephanos & Bouchard), New studios, and a new transmitter.

It's in NBC's interest to have total control with a solid O&O station, from programming, to advertising. Plus it would give them a far more solid news presence in the New England, far better than what it has with WHDH right now. And I'm sure they would fold NECN (since it's an NBC-Comcast property) into WNEU's new news department in both staff and facilities. (much like they did with CNBC West Coast & KNTV)

WHDH/WLVI would survive if they lost NBC. They would become the CW, and WLVI would be an indie again. And since WHDH/WLVI has wide coverage, and is on most cable & satellite systems, they'd still make some $ off advertising. OR ultimately Ansin could just close up shop entirely and do the FCC spectrum buy back program (like one article said he could do).

What will happen to necn programming? While repetitive, I do like Matt noyes' forecasts and the regional news.

I admit I have a huge crush on Pete Bouchard. The man knows every song ever recorded and randomly inserts music trivia into his forecasts. He clearly loves the weather and I trust his forecasts more than anyone else's locally. I hope he's happy wherever he's off to!

I was wondering how (ahem) long it would take for someone to link this video.

There will be life after Pete....I watched Dylan Dreyer for years on Channel 7, and her perky demeanor welcomed me every weekday morning. I was upset that she quit as she became part of my morning routine. A few months after she left for the Today Show, I had long forgotten about her and moved on to another channel.

I haven't watched a weather report, or a full newscast, in I don't know how long. I barely turn the TV on at all. Something I never thought my life routine would exclude but I almost never watch television.

Of course I'm on the computer, smartphone, and tablet a lot. So it's not like I'm enriching my life by reading more books.

Am I the only one?

is off a lot of the time, especially when it's not baseball season. I can't stand local news shows. I turn on Jeopardy and watch some PBS documentaries and shows but that's about it. I read a lot of news online.

Nope.. for 10 years I was a 2-3 TiVo household.. I have none now and the Tivo's live in my basement collecting dust (anyone wanna buy some upgraded Premieres. cheap?!?)

I watch maybe an hour of TV a day now. And it's all streaming. Dumped cable television 2 years ago and don't miss it.

I *might* flip on the tuner to watch local news if the weather is bad or WCVB Chronicle I wanna watch.. but other than than that.. no.

I appreciate Bouchard. His forecast delivery is informed, intelligent and witty. Furthermore, he doesn't bow down to climate change deniers.

I still like paper books better than eBooks.
I still read a physical newspaper on occasion.

But I get all my routine weather (Will today be warm or cool? Rain or snow?) from web/apps.

The only thing I find helpful on TV weather is more discussion of precip amounts, and for that, all TV stations are the same, and are made much better via Tivo so I don't have to deal with all of the teasers or sit glued to the news for 30 min. I also follow some of the weather people on Twitter, but don't pay much attention to which is which.

Why did you leave us Pete?" More money. I guess it's none of my business.

...ever notice colors are more vivid, luminous, brilliant on weather maps of WHDH-TV Boston Channel 7 !... compared to Boston area Channels 4, 5, 25 weather maps.
