A face off in West Roxbury

Mayor Walsh and Gov. Baker face off in West Roxbury

Mike Davis took in the Shamrock Shootout this morning on Temple Street in West Roxbury - which officially opened this year with a face off between Mayor Walsh and Gov. Baker, officiated by Richie Gormley, the lord mayor of West Roxbury.

Then it was down to business for hundreds of local kids in a series of age-based street-hockey tourneys that stretched for several blocks.

What exactly is the "Lord Mayor" of W. Roxbury? Is this like a Water Buffalo Lodge "Grand Pubah" kinda thing like on the Flintstones?

I think it's one of those things where they had a competition a few years back and he won, and then they retired the election because, really, he's just perfect in the role - he even has one of those ceremonial giant medallion things like lord mayors in England wear. He's a really nice guy, funny, everybody knows him and he's always everywhere (at least, when not running his funeral home).

... does anyone agree with me that Baker's haircut is hideous and adds about ten years to his age?

(If it turns out he did it for charity or something, then it's wonderful. Otherwise, the worst haircut decision from a major pol in many years.)

He did it for a children's cancer charity. Not surprised that even that will get him negative comments on this site.

But yes, it looks pretty bad. He looks like some goofy kid from a Norman Rockwell painting now.

Hence the name and all, but they wisely postponed it for a few weeks this year (I remember when it was basically a small block party - kidlet's friends with the daughter of one of the organizers - it's amazing how it's grown).
