Failed downtown nightclub could make way for 30-story residential tower

The old Felt club in downtown Boston

Felt in better days

The Boston Business Journal reports a developer has filed a preliminary plan with the BRA to stick 26 floors of residential space above the facade of the existing four-story building at 533 Washington St. that had housed nightclubs for more than 50 years until the state shut Felt in 2012.

The developer bought the building from the Baldekas family last year.

The arcade was next door on the other side. Felt was a nightclub and before that it was a nightclub.

Wasn't this building at one time the Adams Steakhouse? Either way, I don't think it's "housed nightclubs for more than 50 years".

From aJune 12, 2014 BBJ: A few doors away, a family trust sold the former Felt nightclub club at 531-533 Washington St. to Boston-based Rafi Properties for $7.3 million. The 17,760-square-foot building was owned by Demetra, Karen and Timothy Beldekas of Framingham, who bought the property in 1991 for $1 million.

I used to love going to Felt - if for no other reason than to go around saying, "This must be Felt" and making the appropriate hand motion.

Other than maybe the windows, nothing strikes me as especially saveworthy about this building. Wouldn't it be better to just build something new?
