Fire empties building at Boston Medical Center; patients not affected

The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters responded at 5:05 p.m. to the nine-story Dowling Building, 771 Albany St. for a basement fire.

The building houses outpatient programs; no patients at the hospital were affected by the fire, the department says, adding staffers still at work were evacuated.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but fire commanders ordered a second alarm to bring in extra firefighters to help vent smoke from the building. The cause remains under investigation.

This may create a problem as the call rooms for the housestaff and many of the overnight physicians are in the building which is still closed to all staff because the power is still shut down. With the prior winter storms they have put staff up in empty call rooms when they were unable to drive home after their shift or were staying over between shifts.

Musical chairs, musical beds. Hopefully they'll find it safe to turn the power back on before the storm hits tomorrow night.
