A stubborn trash fire that erupted around 11:20 a.m. at Casella Waste Systems off Rutherford Avenue sent five firefighters to the hospital with injuries, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Firefighters recruited the facility's front-end loaders to try to separate the piles of trash so they could attack the fire, which went to two alarms.
