First piece of Forest Hills overpass to come down on purpose next week, as traffic diversion begins

State officials say next week is when workers take the first real bite out of the Casey Overpass - they're scheduled to remove a piece of the abutment on the rotary side of the hulking, crumbling bridge.

Along with that comes the first overpass-removal detours: Traffic heading from the rotary into Jamaica Plan will be diverted onto the temporary road that's been built alongside the Arborway bus depot - which means the gazillion traffic lights the state has installed will blink into use.

The current Casey site doesn't specify which day the switchover will happen on, but notes workers will first have to finish their installation of pavement and then put down lane markers.

Also:

Traffic seeking to access Shea Circle from Forest Hills Street southbound will be routed via Cemetery Road.

What about the supposed new bus lane for the 39?? Shouldn't they have started that?? Where is that going to go when the bridge starts coming down right onto the pick up area?

Where did you hear about that? I know they're supposed to be working on a new bus area in general, but I don't think there are any plans for a special lane for the 39.

I thought I'd read about the construction of a new temporary lane for the 39 while demo was happening -- it certainly can't stay where it is and the upper bus bay exit is too tight of an angle, isn't it?

The 39 will get a new berth along Washington Street, as part of an expanded upper busway (which explains why they cut the trees down all the way to Ukraine Way).

I hope they do a better job of telling bicyclists where to ride. This work is blocking the entrance to the SW Corridor bike path, and the crossing used by many to Forest Hills. There's no clearly marked detour to enter the bike path now, and bicyclists heading south have a confusing route to continue into Roslindale and West Roxbury.
