Between the petrochemicals, salt brine, decaying lead paint, mercury, metal shavings, ammonia, chlorides, PCBs, and biological funk one wonders the health effects on riders and employees. Back when Homeland Security was blowing money on air quality tests one wishes they would have shared some data with public health researchers. Something really has to be done to clean the tunnels and stations of hazardous materials.

Ordinary weak carbonic acid formed by CO2 dissolving in rainwater leaches calcium out of concrete. When tiny amounts of the water evaporate as the water drips, minuscule amounts of the calcium are deposited at the drip site. This is exactly the same process that makes stalactites in caves. I took a walking tour of the Big Dig before it was finished, with a bunch of geologists and another bunch of cavers, and we saw calcium deposited on stairwell walls by seeping water, which is also something that happens in caves. Stalactites under bridges are common.
