Good grief

Salvation Army bell ringer in Downtown Crossing

Downtown Crossing bell ringer today. Photo by Craig Caplan.

It's barely the first week in November, and we already have a bell-ringer sighting.

MBTA North Station subway concourse about 3:40 pm.

Sure, the Army does some very good work. But do us all a favor and wait another six weeks before ringing your bells.

Was just ranting on this after I saw a picture on Twitter of one somewhere else in the city. This is WAY TOO SOON!

....to people on the street asking me for a handout. Oh wait, I've arleady stopped doing that. Long ago. My charitable donations are never in cash, so that I can get a documentable tax deduction.

Oh well, I like the sound of a ringing bell better than a Sob Story.

I'll gladly take them over any other early manifestation of Christmas.

Almost thought that was Pedro Martinez!

I love to hate Christmas, and I wince when I see Christmas displays going up in stores at the beginning of November. But for real, this is different. The Salvation Army raises so much money and helps so many families have gifts for their kids, and that takes time. And families who are worried about not having anything for their kids for Christmas are already seeking out assistance. So just chill and let them ring their bells! Is all I'm saying.

I'm sorry, but this posting is incredibly insensitive.

I would be more inclined to donate to the Salvation Army, were it not for their history of anti-LGBT behavior. To many people, their bell ringing serves as an unpleasant reminder of discrimination. There are many articles about this on the Internet — here's just one.

Yep. I'm not personally a target of their discrimination and I find them tremendously repellent. The bell-ringing tactics are just another aspect of wanting to be SEEN doing good instead of actually doing good.

And before everyone jumps down my throat, I volunteer, I have opened up my home, I give back to my community in tons of ways that don't involve writing checks to some mega-org with uncountable lobbyists trying to rewrite the constitution in favor of ongoing discrimination.

There are better places to drop your spare change. I'd rather give mine to a panhandler than these noisy guilt-tripping spectacles.

They call themselves Christians, not, they are what give Christians a bad name. I am a single father and needed help. Once they found out I was not married to the mother of my child she hung up on me. When I finally got back to them they told me they had no programs for single dads. I worked full time and just needed a little help with the stress. I know I am going to heaven, just wish this cult realized where they are going.

"They don't give to the organizations I like; boo hoo."

Don't give money then. I on the other hand plan on ringing the bell and helping to give back to MY community.

They still help people in need you know, gay people aren't the only people in the world.

The alphabet soup only accounts for less than 4% http://www.gallup.com/poll/183383/americans-greatly-overestimate-percent...

But ya it ALL about YOU, unfortunate kids, who cares.

The Salvies only help folks as long as they're willing to listen to a few hours of preaching first. An army of compassion only as long as you agree with them.

But ya it ALL about YOU, unfortunate kids, who cares.

You do realize that there's a big difference between "they don't help me" -- which is, arguably, enough reason not to be a fan -- and "they actively work to increase discrimination against people like me"? And that the SA falls into the latter category for gays and lesbians? Do you really believe that not supporting an organization that actively works against you is an attitude of "ya it ALL about YOU"?

I hadn't realized that the percentage was so low.

Charities are vying for the same donation dollars. It is a competitive game. Thus get out and ring early and often.

Honestly, we have Christmas stuff in the stores earlier. That bothers me more than these good, bell ringing, charity workers.

the SA is falling into the same trap the retailers have. If we put our bell ringers out earlier, we'll get exponentially more money than if we wait until after Thanksgiving to start the season.

Given that the bell ringers are located at places (like inside MBTA stations) where the majority of people who pass by are the same day after day, the logic benind this attitude escapes me.

And if bell ringing is that effective in rasing money, then why doesn't the SA do it year round?

They don't like the Gays! They are too Christian! They aren't Christian Enough! They Never go Commando! They ring a Bell instead of play the Xylophone!

They are one of the harbingers of winter and Christmas.

Halloween just ended!

They shouldn't be out here yet reminding me that my union suit will need to be put on and kept on for another 5 months. (and never washed)

It's TOO early for that! It's still FALL! It's not the Christmas season yet!

He rang the bell with gusto though and I forgot all about him ten minutes after I took this picture.

But of course first I made a hefty donation to his pot.

That was a lie. I gave him nothing.

Screw him and his bell.

Using red cups for Christmas. At least the Sally Army is doing this for a good cause.

So the Salvation Army is out earlier this year. If that pisses you off, then you must be a pretty terrible person.

about wanting to go through Fall and celebrate Thanksgiving BEFORE having the Christmas season forced upon us. If more people took that view, then society would only benefit.

Plus, it's not like Christmas decorations in a retail store, which I can easily avoid. The bell ringer is in an MBTA station, which I necessarily have to use to get to and from work.

Lastly, regardless of the good works they do for many people, the fact that the Salvation Army is a charity does NOT entitle them to participate in Christmas creep.
