Good news for people worried West Roxbury didn't have enough banks

The Boston Business Journal reports the Boston Firefighters Credit Union will be moving into the space at Centre and Lagrange vacated by Eastern Bank. Unfortunately, the space is not large enough to let the credit union sublease space to a pizza place or funeral home.

The location is right up the street from the City of Boston Credit Union, which the BBJ notes has become the Boston Firefighters Credit Union's evil arch-nemesis.

that our new neighbors will drive cars with low emissions and have progressive liberal values. If they are young, they will likely have children and add to the dynamism of the neighborhood. If they are urban, they will likely improve the neighborhood with the ideals of walking, supporting public transportation and a cosmopolitan worldview, if they are professionals, they will likely have steady employment (unless they squandered money on a law degree).

Yup, you pretty much described our family, and we have just completed our first year living in West Roxbury. It's been awesome. We didn't have a car when we moved here though. We did eventually cave, but instead of anon's prius we bought a subaru--a lot of our neighbors had them and spoke well of them. Anyway, the point of this story is that we already have a bank, but I am pretty sure some of our neighbors will be happy about this new location.

From what I can glean from anon comments on this development, those new market rate apartments are likely to be filled to the brim with scofflaws, ne'er do wells and probably a few bank robbers. It's just asking for trouble to keep a bank in this spot and a police substation or at least a neighborhood watch building would be better suited.

BTW, when do the anti-development people start trying to use that seemingly historic graveyard as a reason there should be a development? You know, desecrating a funeral plot or something?

At the very first community meeting on the apartment proposal, one woman angrily predicted the graveyard would become a haven for the crack-smoking project dwellers she just knew would move into the building despite its market-rate rents.

Santeria oriented housing development will be a smash hit.
