But how much are they charging for popcorn these days?

Circle Cinema all lit up in Cleveland Circle

Tim Murphy shows us the Cleveland Circle Cinema all lit up last night. Alas, it's not one last movie night before it's torn down for a hotel and a senior-citizen apartment complex, but a training session sponsored by the state for local police (a role it's played before).

I took a few photos myself: https://goo.gl/photos/nGSKWu9h7FZF11dE6

I come home from work every evening at Resevoir as well, and it was striking how different the Cleveland Circle area felt with the power turned back on at the cinema. Too bad it's all for preparation of demolition. How much I'd love to have wandered around in there for the fun of it before it's torn down for good.

I saw "Patton" there in 1970 with George C. Scott, Karl Malden. That's what passed as a "chick flick" back then. Maybe if I went to more movies it'da stayed open.

I love the vintage architecture, but the last two movies I saw there (circa 1997) were terrible. They chopped the place up into so many screening rooms that the screen I saw the re-released "Star Wars" on looked barely larger than my TV set at home. I'm surprised they hung on as long as they did.

Used to go there a ton of times when I lived in Brighton in the 80's. Fond memories of the place. Used to go to the midnight shows the first weekend a new big film was out as there were hardly anybody at them, then the walk back to Brighton center past 2 AM, hit the Store 24 for a late snack. When I see the theatre scene in "Mulholland Drive" it reminds me of sitting in that theatre. I don't know when they chopped up the screens, but the big one back then was as large as any screen in Boston except for maybe the Charles or Coolidge Corner.

So many good movies back then compared to the "product" issued now. Remember seeing "Full Metal Jacket" there as a preview, paired with some Exorcist ripoff starring Martin Sheen. Took the then-girlfriend, now wife to "Bull Durham". Saw "Blue Velvet" in a theatre filled with BC students, and the silence, then loud buzz after the movie ended. For the upstairs theaters you had to walk city blocks but there were no ushers up there and a couple of times I watched double features, but I think the statute of limitations has passed.

Yup, the movies have gotten smaller, as Gloria Swanson said. I see new films now and watch a lot at home, but there is no substitute for seeing a really good movie in a theatre, and when I have occasion to drive by the Cleveland Circle the warm memories come back.

A hotel?!
Great - because I was hoping traffic could get worse there.
