Hundreds of lottery players descend on South Station

South Staton commuters waiting for trains

And the lucky ones get a ride home! Such as Molly Lanzarotta, who looked back through the station to see who was looking up at the departures board around 5:10 p.m.

Its up for the CEO'S of major companies to come to the defense of their hard working employees and demand major changes at the MBTA.

waiting at North Station, I consider myself fortunate that I had to leave work early today. Apart from having to play fare evader (not really true, as I have a monthly pass) at Boylston inbound because all of the three faregates were in "Smart Card Only" mode, I had no issues with the 3:00 Haverhill train.

The commuter rail contractor is at fault for engine failures and schedule delays. It is not the obstructions on the commuter rails to be blamed. Time to bring back AMTRAK as the operator of the MBTA commuter rail.

Sorry to burst that bubble of confidence, but, I'd hardly blame a company that just took over. Keolis signed a contract that promised them new equipment (which the MBTA is responsible for purchasing). They have yet to receive there new equipment. Never mind the fact that we've never had almost 8 get off snow dumped on the city in about 3 weeks. Have you looked at the wheels and undercarriage of the trains? It's telling. They are covered in ice and snow. Better equipment needs to be purchased to remove snow from tracks. When you have no snow removal equipment and it just keeps coming, that's when it becomes a problem that's not going to just go away.

Given that they are running fewer trains on a limited schedule due to equipment issues, why hasn't Keolis been reconfiguring the trainsets to maximize use of the newest equipment (i.e. bilevels) - which will also provide the greatest capacity?

At least on the North Side, they continue to run mostly single level cars with one or two bilevels interspread in the consists. Hardly effective in handling the overcrowding that results when you cancel over half the trains on any given line.

I know that they can't run the bilevels to Lowell (except the one that turns at Anderson) due to low clearance, and I was once told that they didn't even use the bilevels on that after a storm due to ice (which may or may not be true).

Also, bilevels add weight, so a train with added heavy cars may be an issue with braking on icy tracks.

Guess who owns those engines? Yup...the mbta.
