... but I'm not 100% sure. Google Street View doesn't provide quite enough detail here -- the Googlemobile didn't travel down the last block of Lewis Street between Commercial and Atlantic.

Lewis Street in the North End, judging by the signage.

The real story here is the "Hot Beef Tea" sign.

edit: Maybe it's "Hot Beef & Tea"; whatever, it's a good combo

"...a dog fed on beef tea dies as soon as one who gets nothing but mere water."

An elderly Jamaican friend always offers guests at dinner "fish tea," which seems to basically be the Caribbean answer to bouillabaisse.

Anybody else notice the ghostly Red Sox "B" in the window of the shoe repair shop at left where the wind is billowing and awning?

The sign on the building says Lewis St so I'm going out on a limb and guessing Lewis St. It looks to me like this building on the corner of Lewis and North, but it also looks like 2 stories have been added to the building since that picture was taken

1890s... I'm going to say 1895. Just because.

The dead ringer.. the MaBell sign on the door of the shop. AT&T only used that logo from 1889-1900.

Now.. where was it taken. No idea. But thats definately the late 1890s.

There's a flyer for an event taking place Friday, April 23. In 1897 April 23rd was on a Friday.

I'm also with the others on East Boston. They tracked that down well.

(note- originally, I wasn't able to bring up the larger size. I thought it was August instead of April.)

At the corner of now Lewis Mall and Sumner Street.

And I think you are correct.

(Lewis Wharf is in the North End)

This is Maverick Square. You are looking northwesterly along Sumner Street with todays Maverick Station would be 90 degrees to your right. If you looked 90 degrees left you would be looking towards the North End waterfront across the harbor..

This has to be around 1900 just before the East Boston tunnel got built, which means the for the brief time my great grandparents lived in this country they probably went into this store before catching the ferry into Boston.

The building is still there. Google 230 Sumner Street in East Boston and toggle around on the street view.

Maverick Square and Jeffries Point has a sizable Irish community around 1900, thus why one set of my great grandparents came there.

Thanks for posting this.

Lewis Street in this photo is today's Lewis Mall. The view today.

The EB designation on the telephone poll is a reasonable hint.

Try Lewis Street, East Boston, at the corner of Sumner Street -- right at the edge of Maverick Square.

Current Google Street View shows that indeed the building is still there:

I seem to recall that this series had another view of the same building, and same pharmacy, maybe a year ago, or more.

Since many of these photos are pre-construction views before work began on major transit projects, I'd guess around 1902 before they started digging the East Boston Tunnel (opened in 1904).

We have indeed had the same building, and same pharmacy in this series, but from the other side, and probably at a later date (1922). From the UHub-Boston Archives series from March 2014:

That Google is tricky. One view shows the old beat up gas staion in Maverick square , then there is a building being built with one click. There is a Burger King where the barroom used to be, and the other one , Eddie C was Charlie Zuff but he left as well. progress I guess.

I would say Lewis Street at North Street where the Fishermans CLub building now is.

Based on the two detached houses with the steeply pitched roofs in the background, I'm guessing this is not the North End, but the other Lewis St. in East Boston. It's on the waterfront, near Maverick Square and is almost entirely demolished.

Thanks for playing folks! This is the southwest corner of Sumner and Lewis Streets in East Boston, circa 1895-1900.
